Charlemagne
Who: Charlemagne was known as one of the greatest Carlingian Kings.  He was a tireless and remarkably successful military general.

What: He was known for defeating various states and slave people.  He also changed the political and culture face of Europe significantly.  He came to the aid of Pope Leo III, who had appealed for his help after being exiled by a group of Roman aristocrats.  He restored Leo to his position then traveled to Rome.  On Christmas Day, Leo placed a crown of Charlemagne's head and gave him the title "Emperor of the Romans." He was also the first ruler of the Holy Roman Empire.

Where: He was born in Northern Europe and became master of Western Europe.  Through his leadership the roots of learning and order were restored to Medieval Europe.  He ruled the kingdom of the Franks with his brother, and after his brother died he was the sole ruler of the kingdom. 

When: He was born on April 2, 742. In 768 he ruled the kingdom with his brother, and then in 771 ruled it alone.  During the year 772 he launched a 30-year military campaign.?  By 800 he was the undisputed leader of Western Europe.

Why: He did all the things he did for mainly 2 reasons.  One he wanted to expand his kingdom, and two he wanted to convert all of the Frankish kingdom, to Christianity.

How: He aquired his land from his father, and ruled with his brother.  He then became the sole ruler of the kingdom, after the death of his brother.
