His two sons Charlemagne and Carloman, rule the Kingdom. 771 CE : Carloman dies leaving Charlemagne sole ruler of the Frankish Empire. 772 CE : Charlemagne begins to convert the Saxons to Christianity and begins a system of taxes to support the chruches, schools, clergy and the poor Hardrian I becomes the pope of Rome, and seeks help from Charlemagne against the Lombards. 773 CE : The Lombard Kingdom is conquered and taken by King Charlemagne 778 CE : Spanish Muslims defeat Charlemagne at Roncesvalles. 782 CE : 4 500 Saxons are executed in a single day by Charlemagne's command. It was meant to discourage Saxons in their fight against the Franks and Christians. 787 CE : Charlemagne conquers the region of Beneventum, Italy. 788 CE : Charlemagne takes the country of Bavaria since King Tassilo is deposed. 799 CE : The port of Fiume, Croatia is destroyed by Charlemagne. 800 CE : Pope Leo III crowns Charlemagne emperor on Christmas Day, establishing the Holy Roman Empire. |
