Skeet Wymans McCullbird
While building and designing my Experimental airplane I went through a lot of time gathering information particularly on the McCulloch drone engine so popular in gyrocopter use today. The problem I ran into while gathering this information is that hardly anyone is using it in a tractor configuration (the way it was intended from the begining) So I thought I would pass all the work of gathering this information on to those who may follow. My plane is flying at this time 12/29/05 but it will be an ongoing experiment. And I will post my sucsess and failures on this site. I started building on October of 1999 and with life getting in the way finished and recieved my airworthyness certificate on August 23 2005. If you are not familiar with the Hummelbird, this site will have limmited information concerning it by itself. There are many websites devoted to the Hummelbird. But I am going to foucus on the use of the McCulloch Drone engine model #4318a and how it can be used in a light experimental aircraft. The Hummelbird is a light all metal aircraft built from plans. There are no kits as of yet but you can buy pre made parts. Hummelbirds built with the plans call out engine (1/2 VW) ussually weigh in the 300lb range. My all up flying weight is 288lb. I do NOT claim to be an expert on the McCulloch engine, but here are my credentails. I started playing with 2 strokes at 10 years of age. Yes model airplanes! At 15 I started riding 2 stroke motorcycles and have never paid anyone to work on my bikes. I started racing professional Moto-X at 17, and was my own bike mechanic. And worked for several cycle shops in the Sanfernado Valley CA. At 20 I entered the automobille world as a mechanic and was one of the top techs in my field. Through out my life I have worked on everything from weed wackers, snowmobiles, jet skis, and ultralight aircraft having 2 stroke engines. I realize the stigma that a 2 stroke engine carries with it. But if theres one creed I live by its this. If you want a lot of something in life for not a lot of money, develop a taste for what nobody else wants! There is nothing magical in making a 2 stroke a reliable, viable engine. Just a few things to consider. In the combustion world there are few engines that can deliver the HP to weight that a 2 stroke can, and cost wise, while everyone else is using such engines as Rotax and Hirth, they drive the cost of those units up. Mean while the McCulloch has been overlooked. Good for me and those who see its value. So look around at the site, and check out some of the links. And by all means email me with your questions.
