| History Baltimore made their first season in existence a memorable one, winning the Bednarik Division title and becoming the first CFFL Franchise Champion (awarded to the best-run franchise on and off the field). The Palookas lost their first two games, but then ran off a 10-game winning streak, second-longest in CFFL history. One of the Palookas' victories was the Thanksgiviing Day shootout in Boston, as Palookas owner Carl Meyer saw his team defeat his brother's team, the Chazwazzers, in what at that point was the highest scoring game in CFFL history. The Palooka defense put up 88 points to lead the way. That would be the last game Baltimore won in 2005, though, as they lost to Northampton the next week, breaking their winning streak. They lost at home to eventual champion Northampton in the divisional playoffs, but they did clinch the first Franchise Championship. The Palookas struggled at the beginning of 2006, starting out 2-3, but they'd lose only 3 more games the rest of the way. The midseason acquisition of RB LaDanian Tomlinson from Boston was a big factor in fueling Baltimore's playoff run. The Palookas held a half-game lead over Northampton going into a Week 14 showdown at Tiger Field. In a wild, back-and-forth game, the Tigers won the Best Fantasy Football Game Ever in the last minute of the game when Charles Tillman intercepted a Rex Grossman pass. The Tigers won the division title and hosted the rematch at home the next week. The Palookas recovered from their loss, however, trouncing Northampton by 75 points in the Tigers' worst defeat of the season. Baltimore advanced to the CFFL Championship Game, which they lost to Pittsburgh. Baltimore struggled in 2007, starting the season 2-5 and missing the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. The Palookas rebounded in a big way in 2008. After sneaking into the playoffs when New England blew their lead in Week 14, the Palookas went on the road to New York and beat the heavily favored Bo-Aggies in the divisional playoffs. Baltimore then went to Chcicago and handily beat the Soul Reapers, winning their first CFFL Championship. The stadium that the Palookas call home is the Sloshed Pit, a 50,000-seat open-air stadium. They are 15-7 there in three seasons. One of the great traditions in the CFFL is the annual Thanksgiving Day game between the Palookas and Bandits and Duff Stadium in Boston. |
