About Fire Explorer Post 246
We are members of the City of Charlottesville Fire Department in Virginia and members of the Stonewall Jackson Area Council Venturing scouting of the Boy Scouts of America. Our explorer post does everything from fundraisers to camping to running calls with the fire department. The only thing that our explorers are not allowed to do is drive the fire trucks or fight fires. Everything else must go through the approval of our advisors.
Our advisors, Captains Larry Antonacci and Bobby Elliot are employees of the Charlottesville Fire Department and have been advisors since December of 2000. Our Post has a long history starting back in 1980 when Battalion Chief Benjamin Powell started up the post. He went to the Charlottesville Fire Department to see if they would sponsor a post and they agreed to do so. Battalion Chief Powell also went to the local Boy Scouts of America council to see about joining up with them. They agreed also. Through these connections our explorer post has been able to provide first aid and medical assistance to the Stonewall Jackson Area Council at local Boy Scout Camporees and Jamborees. This assistance is of great help to the council. Through the fire department connection, our explorers are allowed and encouraged to participate in department wide ride-alongs on calls, assist with business and hydrant inspections, participate in training and assist with the general maintenance of the stations and their vehicles. Our explorer post has won many awards in the past few years, however our "awards" page is not up yet.
