Midis--sound files et al--require the embed HTML tag to work in
Netscape, bgsound tag in Internet Explorer. The script that protects
group members from hidden virus encoded in the owner's message
prohibits the use of the embed command. Therefore, only those members
who use Internet Explorer will hear any audio file you include in your
start-up.
Furthermore, in order for a file to be accessible to visitors and
members alike either your settings for Files must be unmoderated or
else you must upload the file to a webspace outside of your group such
as your personal or group homepage.
With these two ideas understood, to include a sound file: go to
Settings and click the Edit button for Description. Scroll down to
description and insert the following comand:
<bgsound="http://www.URL/FILENAME.EXT" autostart="true" loop="-1">
Replace URL with the address of the file. Replace FILENAME.EXT with
the filename plus the extension (mid or wav). That will insert a
default console for turning off music or adjusting the volume of the
size proportional to the sound plugin attached to the viewers browser,
will start the music on entry to the group, and will play it
continuously while the owner message page (Home) is in view.
Please do not link to someone else's webspace or file. Download it to
your own computer and then upload it to a webspace you have control
over.

Hello everyone
It was the intentions of the co founders of Club Founders Club to
create a Group where we could go and explore the features of Yahoo
Groups. When the merge was announced many of us had not heard of
eGroups and did not know the layout. Our concern was that one day
everything would be different and our members would be confused as to
the new layout and asking us questions we did not know the answers
to. So we created CFC_EXPERIMENTAL Group. A working group where club
founders could explore and test features with their peers. A place
where you could get ready for the merge, to prepare you for the
questions you might get asked, to let you see the setting changes you
might have had to make in a hurry. All we have asked is that you
respect the chance and the other members.
For the past week, someone has been changing the settings in a
way to impede how the group works. It started by changing the whole
membership to the 'no mail' setting. Last night when I visited the
group, I found all the settings had either been turned off or closed.
I have changed what I could, but as it stands now CFC_E is a closed
club. No one else may join and there is no changing that back. I am
sorry if a member had a problem that they felt they couldn't ask us
co founders of CFC, but instead had to do permanent damage to this
group.
While this group can continue to function as it did with the
members we have. It will no longer allow new people a chance to
explore the features of groups. We are thinking of starting a new
group.
Sorry that one person ruined the opportunity for others to learn.

Dear CFC_Experimental Member:
One of the risks we run in making you all moderators is that someone
will try the wrong experiment, push the wrong button, which is what
happened to CFC_Experimental this week. We state it that way because
we would like to think that it was an accident and not something done
maliciously with intent.
It began with someone changing the access settings for all members to
"No Email." While that may have been the setting some of you desired,
it certainly wasn't how you all wanted to participate. I switched the
entire membership to "Daily Digest" so that we could notify you all of
the problem and have you return to change your settings to your
individual preferences. I would have expected a lot of comment on
that message, but the group was amazingly quiet. Thus, later that
same day, I returned to discover that someone had again switched the
entire membership to "No Email." At that point, I thought having
apprised you of the problem in my earlier mail, you would understand
that it might have reoccurred (apparently NOWAYWINS has been
struggling against these settings changes throughout the week as
well).
This morning, we received word from someone attempting to join us that
our membership had been altered to "private," or closed membership.
While the access problem was one that could be remedied by
communicating with you, switching the club to this "unlisted" mode is
not. It necessitates that we either delete CFC_Experimental and begin
again, or minimally, open the new club while continuing to run the
closed version for the benefit of those who already are members. Some
of the difficulties both of these options impose include: notifying
you of the creation of CFC_Experimental2, copying out any unanswered
questions not addressed this week (like you, we did not receive them),
copying out important group files that we will want to continue using,
running both groups until a sufficient number of you have elected to
move to the new group.
We are indeed sorry that this action must be taken. We hope that you
have found CFC_Experimental to be useful and that you will join
CFC_Experimental2.
Sincerely yours,
CFC_Founders

I'm beginning to have problems with advertising coming into the
board, we have about 550 women on our board. At first I wasn't
allowing URLs to be posted then I thought I would lighten up on the
reins, now I'm beginning to see prices posted for specific products
on my board. Now what ??? I hate being mean and nasty but I can see
this getting way out of control, espeicallly if others join and see
that it's being allowed then they to start posting URLs or specific
product info.. If I allow one or two on the board it can virtually
turn into and advertisment board instead of what it was set up for
which was menopausal support.
Is there anything written by Yahoo that I can cut and paste to the
board before this gets out of control?
Any suggestions,
Guess I just have too soft of a heart,
Vickie

SPAM Out of Control
|

Dear Vickie,
This situation is an extremely serious one, perhaps graver than you realize.
I did a cursory review of the Yahoo! Terms of Service and the Help files
governing groups, jotting down a few points that may help.
1) Under TOS Item#6. MEMBER CONDUCT
You agree to not use the Service to:
f. upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any Content
that
infringes any patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright or other
proprietary rights ("Rights") of any party;
g. upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any unsolicited
or unauthorized advertising, promotional materials, "junk mail," "spam,"
"chain letters," "pyramid schemes," or any other form of solicitation,
except
in those areas (such as shopping rooms) that are designated for such
purpose;
k. intentionally or unintentionally violate any applicable local, state,
national or
international law, including, but not limited to, regulations promulgated
by
the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, any rules of any national or
other securities exchange, including, without limitation, the New York
Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange or the NASDAQ, and
any regulations having the force of law;
While you may not appreciate how these apply, consider that a product name
and trademark are likely attached to many of these ads. Furthermore, state
and local tax laws are often circumvented or inappropriately applied in this
sort of advertising. Even on home based products and services a DBA (doing
business as) must be minimally held for Internet commerce and sales filed
with the local city/county authorities. And, as you can see in item g., all
forms of advertising except in the appropriate areas are strictly
prohibited.
2) SPAM Policy (http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/groups/groups-05.html)
Yahoo! Groups has a very strict policy about spam: members
may not use our service to send unsolicited or unauthorized
advertising, promotional materials, spam, chain letters,
multilevel/pyramid schemes, or any other form of solicitation.
If you are receiving unwanted messages or spam, learn how to
unsubcribe. Although no email-based group is completely safe
from potential spam abuse, Yahoo! Groups reacts quickly to any
complaints of spam and may remove any member who violates
our Terms of Service.
That's a cut and paste.
3) Help File
(http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/groups/messages/messages-13.html)
If you are not the moderator of the group, contact the moderator
and alert him/her to the problem. If you are the moderator, you
have several options:
As a first step, send a warning message to the member.
If the member continues to send inappropriate messages,
you can turn off their ability to post to the group.
You can unsubscribe the member by setting this option in
the Subscriber section of the Members area.
You can permanently ban the member by entering their
email address in the Banned section of the Members area.
You can unsubscribe the author of an offensive message
through the Message View on the group's message board.
That's the background information you need to get started. My
recommendation would be to create a letter as a "special announcement" to
your members, suggesting that the continued advertising in your group is
considered by Yahoo! to be a violation of the Terms of Service and may
result in the loss of the group. This statement is perfectly true if any
one of your members reports your group or if the Yahoo! group surfers happen
to visit you and note the content. Include in your letter a statement of
policy concerning what you consider to be inappropriate message content
based on the information above. Upload a copy of this policy into your
Files folder for your group FAQs and include this policy in your welcome
letter to new subscribers.
If these actions do not result in the cessation of the offending posts, you
may need to take those actions proscribed in 3).
