Hello everyone. As you have read, we have had a major setback in
CFC_E. In the early hours of July 26 a member of CFC_E went thru the
options and either disabled, closed or changed almost all the
settings including deleting some files before deleting themself from
the group. I tried to reset some of the options back to a default
setting but there was to much damage done. The Group as it stands now
is an invite only group. We started a second Group (CFC_E2) and have
transfered the membership to CFC_E2. Again your settings would not
have transfered over. Things are a bit of a mess while AngelPie and i
do damage control, copy data and configure the new Group. We are also
looking into whom may have done this and how. Needles to say we both
both hours behind in our regular computer activities and sorry to say
in our explanation to you. I would like to thank mistybunny for the
postings that she did in explaining what was going on. This is the
first time i have visited any of my Clubs/Groups in about 12 hours.
We hope to have things settled down in the next day or so. We ask
that you check your settings in either Group to ensure they are to
your likeing. For those of you who may not have been transfered or
need the new url CFC_E2 can be found at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CFC_EXPERIMENTAL2.

Groups... (A Learning Experience)
|

Actually, you might have been getting the messages from two groups:
CFC_Experimental and CFC_Experimental2.
Why? I cannot rightly say we were hacked because the person who
destroyed CFC_Experimental didn't need any special invitation or
skills to do what they did. Our first inkling that something was
wrong came on Thursday morning; one of the people who was member of
the group had, the night before, switched all the members in the group
to "no email" access. We had preferred to think it was an accident.
The button for saving a change to one's personal settings is just
below the one that changes the entire group. However, he/she had
followed this up by changing the "Settings/Membership" to "no one may
access," meaning we cannot kick or remove anyone, and then made the
group "private." At that time, we switched the members to "daily
digest" and wrote you all. We had at first thought that the access
switch had been the extent of the tampering and did not notice the
other two changes. As I said, we thought it was an accident.
It was not and accident. As you know, the nature of CFC_Experimental
is to be open to everyone. We might have been able to live without
the controls to delete members, but having been turned "private" was
the major defect we could not overcome. It is irreversible. Thus,
yesterday morning, we sent out a notice to all members that we had
created CFC_Experimental2. In order to send this notice, we had to
switch all access temporarily to one that would allow mail. We are
sorry if this caused excessive mail to member mailboxes but it was the
only way of communicating with you all quickly.
We followed this up by inviting as many of you as was possible to join
CFC_Experimental2, where we hoped we could resume something
approaching normal operations once more. It saddens us greatly that
so many of you approach this incident with anger directed at the
group. We do understand, however, that many of you do not know what
happened and, therefore, only appreciate the personal inconvenience
albeit a temporary one.
Please know we cannot remove or unsubscribe anyone because we are
locked out of these settings. Please know that we cannot communicate
with you at all if your access is "no email." We are ourselves
learning as we go here, but we do understand one thing completely, if
you choose to quit us over this incident then the person who caused
this damage has succeeded at what they set out to do. It is as simple
as that.
We will be removing as many of the previous posts that provided
members with "how-to" information as possible and filing them in the
FAQ Folder in Files in CFC_Experimental2 for the next several days.
While we perform this activity, CFC_Experimental will remain open for
current member use although for web access or "no mail" only. This
should be the last communication you receive from CFC_Experimental.
Please join CFC_Experimental2.
Sincerely yours,
CFC_Founders

angel,
actually it appears there is a way to unsubscribe members afterall.
if you go to "members" and click remove it will take you to a screen
where you type in the e-mail address you want to unsubscribe. but
normally where it gives my member information to the right it says
edit membership. it normally also has a link to leave group but that
link is not there. is that because of their changing the settings?

grrr. I sent the following message through my e-mail and it suddenly
won't allow me to do so because it is html instead oftext only . it
use to work. is this a setting they messed with as well?
that is dumb that there is even a setting that makes the owners
unable to unsubscribe a member. 2nd of all why can't you communicate
with us if we have it set to no mail? you should be able to atleast e-
mail the club members specifically.
since it does list our e-mail address along side it. and we can
communicate through the group rather than e-mail am I not correct?
no worries i am not going to leave the group for this incident. it
isn't your fault this happened. and I feel sorry for you, roger, and
misty a great deal! if there is anything i can do to help let me
know.
hugs!!
April musicalapril@h...
p.s. I just set the setting to no mail and received this by mail...
does this mean my setting has already changed? or did u change mine
to individual e-mail to make sure I received this?

The only setting the scoundrel had access to affecting you personally was
your access preference, e.g.: "no mail," "special announcements," "daily
digest," "individual mail." The HTML switch is only in your personal
preferences although I should say that I have that switched it off in my
personal options as I prefer text only particularly now with the sircam
virus on the lose (not sure it will help, but who knows).
The "no email" setting replaced the "web only access" setting some time ago,
when they installed the "special announcement" feature which only owners and
moderators may use. It gives the individual member the option of turning
off everything and only receiving communication when they enter the group
website. The moderator may override this choice as you saw from the
numerous complaints the past couple days, but does so at the risk of causing
member ire. At present, we would prefer not to continue to anger everyone.
Postings will continue on CFC_Experimental, the closed version, for as long
as members choose to remain or until we are satisfied that the group no
longer functions. However, all members were switched today to "no email" to
prevent further upset. We will not be changing that again and only did so
to communicate the reason for creating CFC_Experimental2 and ask members to
remove themselves from the old group and join the new one. It did cause
some confusion at the outset which we hope we have dispelled. But, to
answer question, the point was that while you can continue to interact
online with the group, you will receive no more e-mails from the group
unless you alter your settings personally.
