The original Central School building, located at 25 William Street, was completed in 1901 as Stoneham High School.  The need for more space grew as it became a combination Junior High/Senior High School between 1924 and 1928.  The school's gymnasium, located in the back of the school, and 12 new classrooms, located to the right of the original structure,  were added at that time.

Stoneham Junior High itself utilized the building from 1955 to 1968.  The building then became known as Central Elementary School in 1968.*
In 1997 Stoneham voters approved funds to renovate the four elementary schools in the town.  This was due to a continuing increase in population, the town's desire to maintain its excellent reputation for education and to address the issue of overcrowding in all of the elementary schools.  Two of the elementary schools were to be renovated and enlarged and the two older schools were to be rebuilt..  As Central School celebrated its 100th Anniversary, a (new) Central School was being built nearby.   In November of 2001, the new Central School , which was designed to resemble a train station due to its proximity to old railroad tracks, was ready for occupancy.
