FAQs
What are PTO Meetings and who can or should attend?
PTL stands for Parent-Teacher League.  ALL are welcome and encouraged to attend at least one meeting. Starting in October of 2002, we will change our once a month meeting night to Wednesdays (from Mondays), as requested by the Central School families.  Several parents initially come to the meetings just to observe.  There is no pressure to do or join anything!  Your opinion is welcome! There is quite a diverse selection of volunteer opportunities, if you wish to be involved (see the PTL Page for more information).  We ALWAYS need more help!  Please consider being involved in a valuable aspect of your child's education and experience at our school.
What is the major school fundraiser, and how much money does Central School generally earn?  What does it go towards?
Similar to the other elementary schools in Stoneham, we have a large (whole school) fundraiser in the Fall.  The money that the school earns from this funds in-school Enrichment Programs and Field Trips, which generally occur in the Spring.  While some of the products may appear expensive, you need to realize that up to 40% of the sales are profits for Central.  The Fall fundraising company(ies) are chosen each year, in the Spring.  We usually avoid large individual sales competition between students and instead award anyone that sells anything a "school spirit" award (past items have been water bottles, t-shirts and ornaments with the Central School name or replica).  You and your child are NOT expected to go door-to-door in your neighborhood!  Please consider supporting this fundraiser if you or friends, family and neighbors are interested in the products and would like to support Central School.
What is "Back To School Night" and who can go?
Back To School night is both a social and academic opportunity to be involved in your child's education. Socially, you will meet children and families from your child's class, and other previous sport and social situations.  Academically, you will meet families from previous years,  new and old teachers and support staff as well as see aspects of your child's work, thus far for the school year.   Any individual Parent/Teacher conferences should be scheduled at a different time.   ALL are welcome:  parents, siblings, etc.
NOTE: Central School also hosts our 1st fundraiser which is a Bake Sale.  ALL parents are asked to contribute items and buy items (at Back To School Bake Sale), if possible. Please consider items for individual sale and package accordingly (individually plastic-wrapped or plastic-bagged).  For allergy purposes, please label items with nuts and peanut butter or avoid all together.  If you're looking for ideas, consider your own kids and what they love!  There are those of us that try to get there early and buy back our own items...
What are "Grade Activity Nights", who can come and how much do they cost?
Grade Activities differ from grade to grade.  They are usually free (paid for by your support of the PTL - either by "Membership Dues" or fundraisers).  Please contribute to Membership dues (truly a misnomer) and fundraisers so that we may continue to offer these social opportunities as well as in-house Enrichment opportunities and Field Trips. Parents and siblings are also welcome and free to most grade-level activity nights.   Volunteers are ALWAYS welcome!  Thank you.
Kindergarten Grade Activity Night:
has been a Magic Show or the like. As it is in the dinner time-frame, we ask that you consider bringing a "bag dinner".  Some families come right at the start with a "to go dinner" from a restaurant or home, while others eat at home before they come.  Drinks and pastries are also offered.
1st Grade Activity Night:
involves a Halloween-themed t-shirt decorating craft.  All members of the family may bring a t-shirt or sweatshirt and Central PTL supplies the painting supplies and sponge shapes as well as refreshments.
2nd Grade Activity Night:
has been Family-oriented Bingo games.  Small prizes are awarded to winners and each 2nd grader is given a free raffle prize ticket, which varies each year.  Refreshments are offered.

3rd Grade Activity Nigh
t:
has also been Family-oriented Bingo games.  Small prizes are awarded to winners and each 3rd grade child is given a free raffle prize ticket, which varies each year.  ALL children are usually given lollipops, "to-go"!  Refreshments served.

4th Grade Activity (Afternoon
):
Pizza and Bingo are served and played right after school  (No cost - PTL supplied).  Parents need to consider transportation home (or to after-school activities).

5th Grade Activity Nigh
t:
has traditionally been to RollerWorld in Saugus.  For those that are interested, bus transportation is supplied from the school and chaperones are needed.  The activity occurs prior to 6pm and lasts to about 8pm.
What is Adult Craft Night, who can attend, approximately how much does it cost, does the school benefit in any way and what is the time frame?
The (adult participation only) craft generally involves some kind of holiday aspect for your home (table centerpiece, kissing ball, etc.) with a floral theme.  The money goes to supplies for the craft.  Cutting and gluing tools are often requested to bring.  The craft is open to all (extended) families of Central School.  Cost is often in the mid-$20.00 range for high-quality supplies that can be expected to last the holiday season.  This is an evening activity that is expected to be fun, social (with tea, coffee and pastries supplied), and somewhat relaxed in the busy holiday season that will provide you with a  lovely handmade expression for the holiday season.  Bring adult family and friends and connect during this hectic time of the year!
