Events and Activities FAQ - page 2
What is the Book Fair all about? Does it serve as a fundraiser for the school?
Scholastic Books provides us with a large selection of books that are geared towards elementary school students of all ages and reading levels.  There are also selections available for younger siblings and parents.  There are two Book Fairs each year at Central School.  One is in December and the other is in April.  Prior to its arrival, a brochure will be sent home with your child, showing only a small sampling of the books that are offered at the Fair.  If at all possible, please consider visiting the Fair alone or with your child.  All children have the opportunity to attend the Book Fair during the time that they would usually go to the library.  The Book Fair is also open one afternoon, after school.  40% of all sales go to Central School!  (See Calendar for dates.)
Volunteers are needed to help.  Please check our awesome Book Fair Page for more info!

Cookie Swap?
This is an adult event that just started last year and was quite a success! Each adult that would like to attend needs to bake a specified amount of cookies, write down the recipe and  bring an empty container for cookies to take home.  The containers of baked cookies are spread out on tables with an amount of each to be taken by all that partake.  Coffee, tea and pastries are enjoyed as this adult social event allows Central School parents and guardians to "relax a bit" during this hectic time of the year and get to know others.  (Tentative date:  Thursday, December 19, 2002)

What is Pasta Night and are the tickets limited due to the size of the cafetorium?
This social event will be new for the 2002-2003 school year, IF fundraising events can support it.  All families that would like to attend will be accomodated as it will be held at Stoneham High.  A lot of volunteers will be needed if this is to be a success! It's from 6:00-7:30pm. The cost is $3.00 per person/family maximum of $12.00. Full pasta dinner, salad, bread, dessert, coffee and beverages. Tickets MUST be purchased in advance. Tickets will NOT be sold at the door. PLEASE COME!

What is the Writing Festival and who should attend?
The Writing Festival offers the opportunity for classes to display writing projects that students have worked on long and hard so that all Central School families can enjoy and appreciate their efforts.  The Festival is usually a one night occasion, spread out in the gymnasium.  During the 2001-2002 school year, the Writing Festival was combined with the Central School Barbecue (BBQ). This will be reconsidered for next year so that the Writing Festival gets the full attention that it truly deserves.  Scheduled for March 19th and 20th:  will be open during Parent-Teacher conferences.

Where is the end of the year Family Event/Barbecue held?
This family event was new for the 2001-2002 school year.  The event was held on the school grounds with the driveway being blocked off, similar to a block party.  It was decided that a caterer
would be more appropriate rather than trying to borrow (multitudes of) grills and line-up volunteers to cook.  We also had a DJ (Central School parents), Games and Races, Stoneham Fire Department brought a fire truck for the kids to check out, RadioDisney brought everyone popsicles and we were all protected by Action Ambulance.  Food began to be served early enough so that families could move onto baseball games and other planned activities.   This event was quite popular as almost 750 tickets were sold!  Tickets are sold in advance ONLY!!  (Tentative date:  Friday, May 30, 2003.  Rain or shine.
A HUGE VOLUNTEER EFFORT IS NEEDED!) Note:  Please support school fundraisers whenever possible so that this event will be affordable to the school.

What is Field Day and who can attend?  What about Kindergarteners who don't have school that day?
Field Day is an all grades physical education event.  The classes are traditionally divided into "red and blue teams" (consider red or blue t-shirts when you see them on sale) and compete in a variety of team sporting events (relays, running races, etc.).   These events are for students ONLY but parents are invited to help and both parents and younger siblings are invited to purchase tickets for the CookOut that follows.   This event is in the A.M. with lunch close to Noon.  Special arrange- ments are made so that ALL Kindergarteners may attend.  (Tentative date:  mid-June 2003 - T.B.A.)

What is done at Ice Cream Night?
Nothing but enjoy the opportunity to have a delicious ice cream sundae with your family during this"time demanding season"  and spend some time socializing with other Central School families.  Volunteers are needed.  Tickets are available in-advance (preferable so that we can sure that we have enough).  (Tentative date:  Wednesday, June 11, 2003)  Volunteers needed!

What are the differences between Kindergarten Orientation, Kindergarten Registration and Kindergarten Open House?
Kindergarten Registration is in January (for attending the next September).  Your child does not need to attend (but may) and,  as you will be filling out a lot of paperwork, it may be preferable that he/she not attend.  Please see the Nurse's Page on this site for information on innoculations that you need to bring with you. There are presently two Kindergarten Sessions in Stoneham Elementary Schools.  Session I takes place on Monday mornings 8:05am until 10:50am (bring snack); Tuesdays and Thursdays are full days:  8:05am-2:10pm (bring snack and lunch/buy lunch ticket).  Session II takes place on Monday late morning/afternoons 11:30am-2:10pm (bring snack); Wednesdays and Fridays are full days:  8:05am-2:10pm (bring snack and lunch/buy ticket.)
Kindergarten Orientation is for adults ONLY and affords the opportunity for Parents and Guardians to learn about our Kindergarten program and hear brief speeches from School Staff.  There are a lot of handouts to take home to look over during the summer months.
Kindergarten Open House is for Kindergarteners-To-Be and Parents/Guardians to check out their
school room for next year, briefly meet their teacher and perhaps see other students in their class.

NOTE: Most events and activities are supported by PTL efforts.  Please consider joining and supporting our efforts, whenever possible. "EVERYONE can do SOMETHING but NO ONE can do EVERYTHING!"
