Jingle jangle

Patty Scialfa and Linda McCartney added some punch to their respective husbands' tunes with it. It's virtually an appendage for Stevie Nicks. Fictional characters Valerie in Josie and the Pussycats, Betty in The Archies, and Tracy in The Partridge Family would have been useless without it. And ABBA's Dancing Queen could feel the beat of it.

Even Sandra Bernhard, on Excuses for Bad Behavior, recalls the disco era, when you could walk into a dark, smoke-filled bar, get high and loose, and gyrate to the funky bass of Sylvester's "(You Make Me Feel) Mighty Real." And then, from out of nowhere, someone hands you--a tambourine.
