Here I am, waiting by my office phone and entirely sympathizing with the stereotypical scenario of the girl who's sitting at home waiting for a guy to call her, while three of my co-workers are dying of curiosity and I'm enjoying every moment of the drawn-out suspense I'm inflicting upon them.

Clearly I have a story to tell today!

On Monday I accepted an out of the blue invitation from said co-workers to attend a movie with them.  I've worked here four years, and this is the first movie I've ever gone to with these particular folks.  They chose the day, not me: Tuesday night (cheap night).  They chose the theatre and the movie and the time: Colliseum on Carling Avenue, Men in Black 2, 7:40pm  (I'm trying to emphasize the luck factor here).

I was on time, arriving at a quarter after 7 when there were plenty of seats still available; they were late (another luck factor) thanks to a wrong turn at an intersection, arriving around 7:30 when our choices were considerably more limited.  When we entered the theatre five minutes before showtime, I had eyes only for four seats together, and there was only one place that stood out to me.  Furthermore, I just happened to go up the aisle first.  It was only after I sat down - honest - that I discovered who I was next to.

She was attractive and very obviously attending the movie alone.  So I chatted a bit, and she was very obviously exactly the kind of person I'm most comfortable talking to; somebody who says an awkward word every now and then, just like me, but has a witty thing or two to say all the same.  We even shared opinions on the previews, and at a couple of points during the movie.  She was (to all appearances) very interested in anything I had to say.

So, afterward on our way out, I gave her my business card.  I'd much rather have given her my home phone number but I didn't have a pen, or gotten hers, but I'm not that forward and I still didn't have a pen.  So she has my work number, and my work e-mail.  What I recall saying exactly was, 'call me next time you're going to a movie alone', and 'maybe I'll talk to you later'.   All I have is her name.  Hopefully she hasn't take the first part literally and isn't waiting until then.

Isn't dumb luck great?
