FRIDAY            June 11, 1999

One Tense Evening

Tonight was my first gig with this variety band.

I was very nervous coming into this gig,  mainly because it had been awhile since I'd played,  almost a month.   And it had been at least two years since I have played Top 40 music.   It seems I had been playing jazz and swing exclusively these past few years.

The band is great!   All pro musicians,  so I couldn't complain about their playing.   I actually had a great time.   I just felt bad because I could've been a little more rehearsed for this gig.   But it was short notice and I was really there to bail them out of a tough spot.   The drummer that was supposed to play with them had split to do a two week tour with a local rockabilly band.

Well,  I wasn't too happy with my performance.   I missed a few endings to songs,  but I ended up faking it and making up an ending that would seem rehearsed.    It was tough,  but the rest of the bandmembers understood my situation.

The bass player and I "locked in" so well,  I really missed playing with a great bass player.   The bass and drums have to be "totally tight" in order for the band to be successful.   The bass and drums tonight were locked in,  no doubt about it!   A much better situation than my previous band experiences!

Overall,  I really had a great time performing with great musicians,  but I had a tough time because I was nervous,  but I got through it okay.
