Shakespeare
In Love

My wife and I went to Landmark Theatres in
Hillcrest to watch the movie Shakespeare in Love, for the second
time!
We both loved the movie when we saw it for
the first time last week, when we knew that we simply had to see
it a second time before it comes out on video. My wife and
I go out to the movies quite a bit. We consider ourselves movie
buffs, and if we have time to go out, we usually go out to
the movies.
Well... back to Shakespeare In
Love. This movie is a brilliant piece of work in my book,
a special film, totally different from the batch of recently released
films. It's up for four Golden Globes and I'm sure it'll be
in the running for some Oscar nominations.
I'm definitely not scholarly material in
regards to having a knowledge of Shakespearean plays and sonnets,
nor do I have any familiarity whatsoever in regards to Shakespeare's life,
but the movie is such that it inspires one to appreciate the beauty of
Shakespeare's works, and of course his genius. I'm glad
I saw it a second time because I caught some of the references to much
of his works this time around, since I went ahead and research Romeo
& Juliet, and much of the Sonnets.
Gosh! I spent most of this entry
talking about a Shakespeare! You'd think I worked for Universal
or Miramax by the way I've been promoting the movie, but I get that
way sometimes when I'm fanatical about a movie that I really, and
truly enjoy.
So... on to Dimitri Shostakovich!
I've been listening to Shostakovich's
5th Symphony lately. The first time I listened to this
work was back at the university. It's an enormous work that,
in my opinion, shows the human nature, depression, oppression,
and then the triumph and victory. It reminds me of Beethoven's
5th, especially its expression of victory and triumph, especially
in the Finale. I'm amazed that this symphony is to me very
recent (composed in 1937), this century! To me
that's NEW, a relatively recent hit compared to say Bach's Air on
the G String.
