BTO studio session day two:
It was about 8pm or 9pm...
I wasn't really
checking the time.
Big Time Operator was in 'Studio West'
recording
the next song for the forthcoming CD.
We
rehearsed and recorded a ballad composed
by our
executive producer, Donna Coté,
a song called
Two Shadows. She's a very
energetic lady of 75
years, a singer and a pianist who
has been
performing for most of those 75 years.
She
currently has a gig playing piano and
singing at
Tom Ham's Lighthouse here in San Diego,
a gig
she's had for more than twenty-five years.
She's
quite a gal!
Anyway, this lovely song, from
what I heard,
was composed by Donna back in 1941.
I don't know
why she never recorded it before,
but when I
started playing the brushes to this lovely
yet sad
ballad, I began to feel the essence
of this song
she wrote. I know the song
could very well have
become a 'hit' during its time,
and it is one of
those gems that was tucked away gathering
dust
perhaps, and BTO was now going to
finally record
it for her and resurrect this work of
art, and
give the song its due!
As I was playing drums in my isolation
booth,
peering through the glass at Donna playing
the
piano to her own song, this song
written long
ago, I saw the passion and emotion
in her
performance, and was deeply moved.
After the first take, and after we
had finished
listening to the playback in the control
room,
Donna suddenly burst into tears...
I think we
were all deeply touched, for it
had been a song
she probably dreamed of recording for
so long, to
have this special song of hers recorded...
finally. And she even protested
about playing
the piano in her own song, but we
just had to
persuade her to play her song. I'm
sure there
were some feelings she wanted to get out,
and
only she could express them.
I think we all felt
honored to have recorded this song from
long ago,
a lost gem, now rediscovered and
polished to the
admiration of its composer, and
finally recorded
for all to hear and admire...
We love you Donna!!!
