a poetic journey
about me

  June 09, 1998        my son's b-day

Today's my youngest son's birthday!   He turns six.   This was the very day six years ago that I took my wife to the hospital and only twenty minutes after arriving,  our son Jordan was born!   A very quick delivery!!!

Jordan's kindergarten class had a field trip to the space theater today and I volunteered to be a driver.   I took three kids,  including my son.   There's a science section of the theater which is quite huge,  and contains all kinds of fun experiments and exhibits.   It was a bit nerve-racking having to keep track of three kids,  especially when a whole bunch of other kids from different schools are there and it seems like complete mayhem as kids will tend to wander off somewhere.   Each parent tried to keep their children together,  which was quite an effort.

Once 10:30am came around,  it was time to make our way into the space theater.   Now it had been awhile since I had gone to one of these space theaters,  you know the kind,  with the domed screen and having a large ball in the center of the room with a light inside that shows thru pinholes that project onto the screen to represent various stars.   Well I was quite impressed.   For this ball (costing over a million dollars) was quite sophisticated and showed the stars and constellations accurately,  along with the various colors of each star and their sizes.   A city was projected onto the screen in the lower portion,   and clouds billowed overhead,  so as to appear as if you were atop a hill overlooking the city and looking up at the stars from that hill.   The whole show was geared toward the children obviously,  and they sang along to tunes such as Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and Starlight, Starbright....   It was a rather clever way of getting kids interested in Astronomy.

After school,  my son and I went to buy things for his birthday party this Saturday.   After that I had to drop by Tower Records to deliver 30 of Big Time Operator's CDs for transfer to the Tower Records in Denver.

It's funny how one day I got this call from the manager at Tower Records in Denver requesting eleven of our High Altitude Swing CDs because they had heard our CD  was doing so well in Southern California.   You see,  the swing scene has taken off in Denver,  according to the Tower Records manager in Denver.   So went the received the CDs,  they played one over their store stereo system and all of the CDs sold immediately.   So they asked for 30 more.   Well,  that batch of CDs has now run low and they requested 30 more again.   Thus,  another trip to Tower Records at Sports Arena.   I also ended up reconsigning 20 more at the Sports Arena store,  since while I was there,  our stock of CDs at this store had dwindled down to 11.   Great!   I think everyone in the band is a bit surprised that the CD has done so well.   I think we've been blessed as far as the CD is concerned.

Well,  after Tower Records my son and I went to Toys R Us so that he could choose whatever he wanted,  and he ended up wanting a Buzz Lightyear talking action figure.   I was surprised,  since I thought he was over that movie by now.   I guess he's rekindled his interest in the movie as well.

When we finally got home,  my wife was already home with 6 red helium-filled balloons (red is my son's favorite colour) and a cake and some ice cream.   What a pleasant  surprise for my son.   We had our own little family party for him,  and it was nice.

Later on in the evening,  we wanted to take my oldest son Toys R Us to get him a type of train called a coaster.   We wanted to get him something so he wouldn't feel left out or jealous of his brother.   Us parents can be real softies sometimes.   We couldn't find one there so we went next door to Target and couldn't find one there either,  so I guess we decided to check out the hobby stores in the next day or two.

After that we went to Borders,  a book,  music and video store.   My wife ended up buying a nice compilation CD with some of the world's greatest tenors and sopranos singing their favorite arias.   I settled on a classical CD of Mozart Piano Concertos performed by jazz pianist Keith Jarrett.   I've been a big fan of Jarrett's since I first heard his Koln Concert in 1976 (i was just a kid then,  trust me).   He's been getting into the Classical stuff recently which is great.   It makes sense since classical music was Jarrett's original area of study.

It had been a long day for me today.   When we finally arrived home later in the evening,  after getting the boys to bed,  I put on the CD I just purchased and played Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21.   I find it very relaxing to listen to classical music at night.   I updated my website and finally went to bed.
