THURSDAY        August 20, 1998

Woke this morning and had breakfast with the kids as usual.   Nothing much,  just cornflakes with milk.

The kids went out into the neighborhood with their bikes;  typical morning, since they are out of school for the summer.   I checked my email and sifted through more than a hundred e-mail messages,  most of which were from the BTO and RCR mailing lists.

Took the boys to their swimming lessons today at 1:30pm.    This was the last lesson of the six week session,  and we would have to schedule another six week session next week.

I took Jordan to his soccer practice at 5:30pm and my oldest son came along to watch.   Well,  Cameron found one of the kids in our neighborhood and played with him for awhile.   Chase's sister Allison has soccer practice on the same field too,  so both my boys are excited to have their friends  around the field as well.   These soccer leagues are very popular in our area and the parents are really into the whole thing.   But it's always treated as a fun sport with no pressures,  at least at the levels my two boys are playing at.

No gig tonight,  but I'm still tired from last night at the Rhino Room.   Looking back,  my solo last night was a lot more swingin' than usual,  and I seem to be branching out into a new area  of soloing as I see it.  I've been very impressed by the show Stomp!,  the one where all the people are dancing and banging on pots and pans and on anything they can get there hands on up there on the stage.   Their stuff is very rhythmic and syncopated.  Well,  the same goes for soloing in a swing context.   It's highly possible for a drum solo to still be very danceable,  and that way,  everyone still has fun with it.   But the whole concept is syncopation.
So it's something I'm really concentrating on and practicing on,  especially in my mind.

My wife and I didn't do anything tonight, as far as going out on the town.   We just stayed home this time and had a quiet night together with the kids.   The kids were watching this Mickey Mouse video that my wife had gotten for them,  at their request of course.   It's a nice video that spans all the Mickey cartoons from the steamboat Willie cartoons to the present.   I was watching a little bit of it with the boys.   I always get a kick out of watching cartoons.   Very relaxing for me.
