The Royal Crown Revue Mailing List

The Royal Crown Revue mailing list was quite active today!   Our leadsinger Warren was busy posting messages galore.   What a flirt.   Well,  he's really exposing himself to the whole swing scene in a way,  which is great for the band,  adding to the publicity of a known spokesman for this new swing movement.

I can't wait for the Big Bear California Swing Weekend.   I think that'll be a big deal.   I mean,  the CBS Morning News Edition will be interviewing our band,  along with others performing that weekend.   I'm looking forward to next weekend being a real blast,  and the organizers of this event are providing cabins for the band and food and other accomodations.

I'm also looking forward to tomorrow's big show at The Palace in Hollywood with The Bill Elliot Swing Orchestra and 8 1/2 Souvenirs.   I haven't heard too much about the latter,  but Bill Elliiot's CD on Capitol is pretty hot!

Gambling at the Races

I've never been a big gambler, especially when it comes to the horse races.   I've only gone once here at Del Mar and I bet six dollars, lost it, then bet six dollars again on the next race,  won it back and I haven't gone to the races to bet ever since then.   Now I appreciate the ambience, the pageantry and the whole social aspect of the races.   The big thing here at the races is looking at all the beautiful and unique hats that all the women are wearing.   But I must question the use of horses in this type of event.   I somehow feel sorry for the horses.   But I'm no expert in race horses,  and they probably are the best cared for horses in the world.   I know they're in the best of shape.

BTO Concert After The Races

Big Time Operator performed a nice show after the races in a concert-size stage with lots of lighting and an awesome sound system.   I was a little bothered that I didn't get the riser (which is usually by custom provided for the drummer).   The only riser on the stage was used by the trumpets and trombone.   I didn't really care about it until my wife mentioned that there were so many people at this concert and no one could see the drummer!   Well,  that's the problem.   I'm always sitting and everyone else in the band is standing!   I think it's common sense for a band to utilize the visual aspect of the drummer when it comes to these types of shows that are more of a "concert" setting.

Debbie and her friend were there,  and I got a chance to talk with them after the show.   She mentioned how nice it was at the Catamaran where there's plenty of room to swing dance.   Tonight it was your typical concert setting and the dancers up front were almost body slamming rather than swing dancing.
It was great.   Well, our discussions turned to aspects of East Coast Dancing versus Lindy Hopping,  which I thought was beneficial to me as a drummer.   Any sort of input about the dancers and their concerns are always a concern to me too.   The grooves are very important to dancers,  and one day,  I'll learn to swing dance too.   It just seems I'm always playing music and simply haven't got the time to learn how to swing dance.

Shirley was also at the concert.   I remember seeing her at the very front of the stage,  in front of Shannon.   Shirley and Shannon broke up awhile back,  but Shannon wrote this fabulous song about her called "Shirley An Angel".   It's good to see that couples remain good friends after they break up,  I think that's a very nice thing.

Bobbie,  Nate's wife showed up with the baby.   Nate says baby Olivia looks exactly like Bobbie and with Bobbie's attitude too!

There's Something About Mary

Last night my wife and I finally got to go out and see a movie.   We watched "There's Something About Mary",  the one with Cameron Diaz.   I thought it was pretty darn hilarious,  if not a bit campy and slapstick.   But I like the way they did it.   I think that kind of humor went over well with the audience,  at least the one we were with last night.   After the movie there were these two rather "heavyset" young women commenting on how Cameron Diaz is such a beanpole,  and that they just couldn't figure out what was so hot about her.   I don't know about that,  but I think lean women look great!   Well,  she is rather lean,  but I think she looks good.   She got an interestingly cute face that I'm sure makes her a box office draw.   Well,  there was a scene in the beginning in which they showed a high school setting in the 1980's which I thought  was so funny.  Boy,  the times they really are a changin'!

Swimming Lessons

I took my two boys to their swimming lessons earlier today.   They have a private swimming teacher who teaches them one on one.   One of the boys goes on for half an hour,  followed by the second boy,  for a full hour at the Gold's Gym swimming pool.   The boys are coming along quite well in their swimming lessons.   I wish I had started them when they were infants like some parents have done,  but better late than never.   And they're almost at the point now when they can just swim all by themselves,  but the little one keeps shaking his head when it's underwater during his freestroke,  I don't know why he does it.
