Rants, Anyone?
Remakes and Retreads
I'm tired of all the remakes. The classic 60s show
Secret Agent Man has been reworked for TV. You know it's bad when you watch a show and think, "That guy's watch is pretty cool" and that's the only compliment you can dish. I loved the edgy suaveness of Patrick McGoohan in the original series. Diva, everyone's favorite French Opera/Action pic, is supposedly being reworked for Whitney Houston. Don't even get me started on the whole Charlie's Angels rigamarole.

Idea: Do something that hasn't been paved over already. It takes as much money and time to make a decent film as it does to make a stinker. Hell, sometimes it takes less money and time. When people don't have the funds and the time, they do more preparation up front. Check this out: Jim Jarmusch made 2 great films with fascinating characters and stories.
Ghost Dog showed us the relentless collapse of an urban samurai's life and Dead Man tore apart its main character. What is character? Is it self-defined? Do others define us? Go to the video store.

I know Mr. Jarmusch will probably never be as well-known as George Lucas or Steven Spielberg, but it's great to have him on the planet. Our future films will be all the better for his being here. Ground is being broken, though. American Beauty made some rock, right? Well, what laid the groundwork? Ordinary People. Make you think commercial?  8/1/2000

Dennis Miller on Monday Night Football
I have to admit: when I first heard that Mr. Miller got the job, I actually screamed out loud. Not for joy. The horror. The horror. Pretty scary. I don't know who else was tapped for the gig, but Dennis?

Naughty, Naughty...
Guess who's contributed to both Bush's and Gore's campaigns? I wasn't so much shocked as annoyed, which is shameful at my young, idealistic age. I'm not supposed to be jaded yet. I wish I'd been alarmed about this. 9/2000
Aunt Jemima's Doo-Rag
I wax nostalgic for a controversial icon. It's all too easy to sanitize every single thing that seems "diversity insensitive". People need to open their minds. If a person is black and listens to Hip Hop, is she playing into a stereotype or is she just doing her thing? Let people be themselves and we won't have to worry. There is no single way to be Black. We come from many places, embrace different cultures, dance to different music, and are born to different parents.

Each one, teach one.  8/2000
Death of the Whuppin'
My parents are good, hard-working people. They're still married, after 30 years of togetherness and raising two children. They have their flaws, as does everyone else. My brother and I are extremely well-behaved and neurotic, due to their influence. We're thin-skinned people, my bro and I, but a roll of the dice gave us a mother and father who believed that smacking their children on the butt with a belt was good for them. I'd like to think I would have been a good child without licks from the belt. Now read this. 9/05/2000
The Art of Snore
I went to see my man Wesley Snipes with my hubby and Wes had the nerve to deliver us this steamin' pile of mess. Damn.
The Cell
This isn't so much a review as a ramble. Pardon me. I had a strange time at the film.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Was this a dream or a film? Yes.
