| Aunt Jemima's Doo-Rag refers to the lovely head scarf (or babushka, if you will) on the old-fashioned version of our beloved pancake mix and cornmeal icon. I know there was a great deal of controversy over her appearance, because of the new sensitivity to ethnic differences, but I don't think of Aunt Jemima as a "Mammy" stereotype. To me, she looked like women I saw every day as I grew up. Stereotypes happen when people don't THINK with an open mind. I remember when our beloved Aunt was updated and given a modern hairstyle. She's got a nice, middle-class, press-and-curl 'do and is fully made up. But what about the rag? It's actually trendy now to wear a doo-rag out in the street, albeit for hiphop-encultured folks. Tommy Hilfiger has one in his clothing line, for goodness' sake. I suppose Auntie is a little over the core audience age to wear the new type of rag. I sigh and sometimes let a tear fall. It's not that Auntie J. was so lovely with it. She was just warm and familiar. My real-life aunts have been known to stir a pot while wearing the doo-rag and a chenille housecoat. I miss the rag. I know it will never make it back onto the package. Those days are over. Mainly, I think the rag is gone because our lovely Aunt now has time to have her hair done and go play Bingo. I suppose we can make our own damn pancakes and cornbread. |
