REGIONAL FINALS at Bradfield College, near Reading.

Sat 21st February

Schools taking part, all of whom had won their own County U15 competition:

Unfortunately the ECB fixed the date of this important competition on a day when all the contending schools were on  their half term holiday. This  effected all of the teams, many like DCHS, lost key players & some, not surprisingly, found their teachers were unavailable. Three teams had to withdraw before, what should have been the high point of their winter season.

Dr Challoner’s arrived at Bradfield with a depleted squad but with a very determined one, 2 girls were playing their first matches for an U15 cricket team & Sian had taken over the captaincy. She set the tone for what was to follow, with an extensive warm up session & briefing to her squad that left none of us in doubt about  her plans for the day!

DCHS  started the day  with a win against Hall Mead School, taking 8 wickets in the process. Then facing the old enemy’ Berkshire in the shape of The Abbey School, we had a really tense encounter, taking 2 of their wickets as they reached 58….. & then DCHS ended their innings on 58 too but without losing a wicket, so we took the winners points! After a busy start to the day, important busines loomed… a well earned LUNCH BREAK  followed. Was it the football in the sunshine or the    relaxed atmosphere as we sat back watching others do the hard work?…… Who knows?…but the afternoon session was much harder……against both Maidstone Grammar & Headstone Manor our bowlers worked  to Sian’s plan , the fielders excelled,  backing up was definitely in evidence…………but unfortunately we batted too slowly, overs drifted away & hard as we tried the run rate was not good enough. So we lost the   two  afternoon  matches.

Points were added , totals double checked, Jenny Day the ECB Development Officer announced the results…………  So DCHS had gravely missed the services of their captain Hannah & also Lucy & Charlotte too, but Sian’s team had  challenged  for a place in the National Final. they finished the day equal 2nd on points, behind the winners…..Headstone ManorCC of Middlesex!

Congratulations to Sian & the DCHS Squad, certainly a day of many happy memories & Challoner’s send all the very best wishes to Headstone as they progress to the national final, where they are defending the title they won last season

U15 COUNTY SCHOOLS SEMI FINALS & FINAL

HIGHCREST v  DR CHALLONER’S HS

THE GRANGE v BEACONSFIELD HS

SEMI FINAL:  HIGHCREST V DR CHALLONERS

Starting the DCHS  innnings with two straight 6’s,, Alex was then dealt with by Aimee ,who trapped her caught by Sam at mid on. The Sophie’s P & S bowled accurately & caused a stutter in the run rate. Sophie P eventually teased Sarah Jane (10) into attempting an impossible run & Sian fell in the same way for 13.Knowing the range of Highcrests talent, 71-4 looked within their reach. In reply Sian had Sophie S caught behind in the first over , now it was left to Sophie P. She collected runs all round, & crashed more  into the boundary wall. Highcrest   were threatening the DCHS total in the last over , when Lucy stuck out her left hand to stop yet another 6 & pulled off a stunning catch! Highcrest had run it close but on 56-2 had not quite kept up their challenge.

Dr Challoner’s 74-4            Highcrest 56-2                                                                                        DCHS WIN

SEMI FINAL: BEACONSFIELD HS v THE GRANGE

Kim hit out for Beaconsfield in the opening over of their innings but was smartly run out in her quest for more runs. Jenna & Kim formed a good partnership, putting on 43 together while bowlers Sophie & Tasha tried to slow their run rate. Beaconsfield made 54-1, a total that looked within the reach of the experienced Grange squad. Beaconsfield bowlers were naggingly on the spot, limiting The Grange to 9 runs from their first 3 overs. Tasha & Jenny upped the run rate, but well directed bowling from Kim & Katy put the brakes on again. Tasha on 18, was well caught by Katy off Katherine & Jenny retaliated by  firmly lifting her drive into the boundary wall. But despite a free scoring last over, The Grange were left on 56—1, just 2 runs short of victory.

Beaconsfield 57-1                The Grange 56-1                                               BEACONSFIELD WIN

FINAL: BEACONSFIELD HS v DR CHALLONERS HS

A tentative start to the Beaconsfield innings was compounded when Challoners’ bowler Sian took a wicket in the opening over. Kim continued to bat soundly but she could not find anyone to stay with her &  but Beaconsfield struggled to make 30 runs with Hannah & Lucy taking 2 wickets apiece & Alex finishing on 2 wickets. for 4.  When Challoner’s made their reply Katherine took an early wicket when Hannie took a firmly hit drive to dispense with Hannah. But despite tight bowling from Kim  they could not stem the flow of runs  & Sian hit out-retiring on 20. Lucy kept up the pace & Challoner’s registered their win with 87 runs!

Beaconsfield 33-7              Dr Challoner’s 87-1                                                                 DCHS WIN

The finals were umpired by Cliff Pocock & Eileen Powell. Cliff then went on to present the U15 Cup  to Hannah Stephenson the Challoner’s captain and wish her team all the best in the Regional Finals.

According to the ECB rules for this competition the fielding team gains 3 runs for each wicket taken. As a result, the finishes are often very tight as both team’s totals change….often right down to the last ball!

Chesham High v Dr Challoners v The Misbourne v The Grange

played at The Grange School, Aylesbury       27.01.04

The Grange v Dr Challoners.

Holders, Dr Challoners, suffered an early surprise as wickets fell to Michele C in the opening over. Lucy F quickly found the boundary wall & was retired on 20 before Sarah B helped them on their way to 67-5. Sannah M & Jenny B picking up valuable wickets at the death.

With a run out in the first over, the Grange had no time to settle & it took Georgia S & Sannah M to steady the team & help post a strong reply, that fell just short of the required total.

DCHS 88-5             The Grange 61-7                                                                                   DCHS   WIN

Chesham High v Misbourne

Hannah B-J & Carys W batted steadily for the High & with 11 runs apiece it was the 4th over before Becky L took the first wicket. Imogen B-J batted in the same mould, later supported by captain Helen M to stretch their total to 72-3. For Misbourne, Hannah McM & Zoe opened the batting & were making good progress until Helen M took 2 wickets in an over & Misbourne struggled to keep the runs flowing, finishing well short of the improved  total.

Cheham High 89-3      Misbourne 50-5                                                                        CHESHAM HIGH WIN

Chesham High v The Grange

Michele C’s tight bowling  allowed just 6 runs from her 2 overs, caused problems to the High’s batters. Sharp fielding from The Grange kept  the pressure on til in the final over Sophie R grabbed 2 wickets as Chesham tried to accelerate. 31-5.    The Grange openers Tasha J & Jenny B always had the small total in their sights, the High strove hard for the necessary wickets to get themselves back into the game, but the batters experience showed as they quietly accumulated a winning total for Aylesbury, without losing a wicket.

Chesham High 31-5      The Grange 49-0                                                                        THE GRANGE WIN

Dr Challoners v Misbourne

Dr Challoners openers set about the Misbourne bowling attack, Sian C with a rapid 14 before she demolished her own wicket in quite spectacular fashion. Then Alex R smote 3 more 6’s & was retired, leaving Heather McN & Zoe to bowl their team back into the match.     Facing 47-3,  Zoe & Hannah McM plundered 6’s, but Alex had the last word with a smart c&b to take care of Zoe, effectively slowing the run rate. Their total crept to 48-1, needing 3 to win, with just Alex’s last over to come.  Dot balls there were aplenty but  Hannah clipped the last ball for 3 & Misbourne had won!

DCHS 50-3,             Misbourne 51-1                                                                                 MISBOURNE WIN

Chesham High v Dr Challoners

All 4 of Chesham High’s  bowlers kept the run scoring low as DCHS lost Sian C & later Hannah S to smart fielding.  Runs from Lucy F & Alex R saw them safely to the small total, 36-2 ….. a low score to defend!             At 17-0 the High looked to be on their way to victory but Lucy F took 2-2 in an over & upset the balance of the match………Helen came to the crease & hit a couple of boundaries  Rachel L in support but 34-3 left them a tantalising 11 runs short.

DCHS 45-2,       Chesham High 34-3                                                                                    DCHS WIN

The Grange v Misbourne deferred as we ran out of time.

Unfortunately Misbourne fielded 3 over age players in their team and so their games did not count towards the competition result.   DCHS gained 2 wins & The Grange 1win, so they go through to the county final on Friday 6th February. Chesham High finished in 3rd place, but they look to be a strong force for the U13 competition as their younger players had an influential part to play in this U15 competition.

Highcrest School v Cressex School v Beaconsfield High

played at The Cressex  School, High Wycombe       03.02.04

Cressex v Highcrest ………Winning the toss & putting Highcrest in to bat Cressex bowled tightly til KirstyW and Aimee started to play their shots. They were eventually out in the 6th over leaving Sophie P & Sophie S to move their total onto 31.

It was Kirsty & Aimee again with wickets in their first 2 overs that had Cressex reeling, but Anisah & Sumera played their shots & took the Cressex total to 22, unfortunately short of Highcrest.

Highcrest 46-2, Cressex 22-5                                                                                      HIGHCREST WIN

Cressex v Beaconsfield ………Beaconsfield’s opening bat Jenna was bowled in Sabeeta’s first over while Shamila claimed a wicket too, leaving Beaconsfield on 15-2. Cressex were unable to take more wickets though, as Kim & Katie built a partnership of 24 runs,  making a total of 40-2. Naila & Sumera, batted right through the Cressex’s 8 overs, Beaconsfield fielded well & their bowlers were very economical, Kim conceding only 2 runs….& left Cressex 15 runs short of a winning total.

Beaconsfield 40-2, Cressex 25-0.                                                                          BEACONSFIELD WIN

Highcrest v Beaconsfield………With Beaconsfield’s bowlers landing the ball on the spot, Highcrest opening batters had to work hard to find 10 runs from the first 4 overs. Smart fielding was in evidence as Aimee tried to raise the run rate, only to see Jenna pocket a sharp catch. Katherine had broken through with I-I off her over. Both Sophie S & Sophie P tried to increase the run rate but they only managed 25-3……..would that be a big enough total? Sensible batting, with no risks, saw Beaconsfield steadily overhaul  the Highcrest total.Needing wwickets to get back into the match, both the Sophies bowled attacking overs. Beaconsfield  were not tempted & finished on 28-0 a win to them  by 3 runs. Well played both teams  a very tight finish to a great evenings cricket.

Highcrest 25-3, Beaconsfield 28-0                                                                      BEACONSFIELD WIN
