Abov: Bucks U13 at colwall 2005' It was sunshine all the way for Bucks U13 girls when they played at the Colwall Cricket Festival. A party of eleven U13 cricketers+ coach Phil+manager Tina ably assisted by Karen Stone + the indomitable Alan scorer & statsman, laptop wizard…. well, more like Under 13s very own technical assistant, perhaps!
v GwentArriving on Tuesday afternoon, as the boys festival was reaching its conclusion, Bucks had a 20 over warm up game against Gwent playing to the well known, ’Gwent Rules’.Top scoring opportunities went to Holly 20, Georgie & Ruth 17 each in our total of 160…. (Miss Extras was, in fact, our top scorer by a notable margin!) Vicky was Gwent’s top scorer, ably assisted by Jo & Katy. Sharp run outs by Bucks were the feature of the evening until Georgie chipped in with 2 wickets for 3 runs, ably supported by Lydia & Lorna, Gwent were 31 runs adrift at the end…. Despite a large contribution from Miss extras!
v Warwickshire Bucks 129-all out Warwicks 95-all outNext morning Bucks went on to face Warwickshire in a 40 over a side skirmish. Geogie & Alice opened Bucks batting, but against the speedy Warwickshire bowling attack it was 26-3 before Amy & Alice put together a stand of 40. After Amy was bowled for 18, wickets fell at regular intervals, but Alice continued stoutly at the other end. With 11 overs still available number11 batter Harriet came to the wicket with just 102 runs on the board. Alice kept on strike for 7 overs, scampering a single off the last ball. While Harriet looked calm & backed up sensibly they put on 27 very valuable runs. When Alice was eventually bowled for a pb of 42, Harriet had faced just one ball in 7 overs, & even more important they had set a very frustrated Warwckshire a target of 130 to win! (Miss Extras had made a useful contribution too!) . As their batters warmed up the astute Phil formed a cunning plan. The pitch was very slow, their batters looked fluent, so Phil changed our tactics … “open with some slow bowling!”…. Well Susie was up to it… Little did she realise she’d come to Colwall that she’d make her debut as a county opening bowler!. Lorna opened at the other end & in the fourth over started Warwickshire’s worries by bowling their fluent opening batsman who had already hit 3 fours! Captain Ros kept up the pressure, taking out their other opener, making it 42-2. Holly was kept busy in the outfield as wickets tumbled, Ros took 4 for 6runs,& Harriet 2 for 31, leaving Warwicks’ final score 34 runs short.. Well played Ruth for being tidy behind the stumps keeping the byes total small, Miss Extras had made 53 runs for us, a useful contribution.
v Herefordshire Bucks 105-all out Herefordshire 99-9 This pitch appeared even slower than yesterdays and most people found runs hard to come by. Well played to Lydia making16, Ros 15 & another batting pb this time from Lorna 24, as she stoically helped Bucks to post a total of 105. It took a sharp run out from Georgie & another from Ros to unsettle the determined Hereford batters, before Ros hit back with a 6 over spell of 3 for9 that left Herts reeling on 99-9 having completed their 30 overs. Harriet took 2-22, Holly 1-7& Alice 1-18 v Leicestershire Leics 71-all out Bucks 72-8In the final game, Bucks faced the previously unbeaten Leicestershire, who chose to have first use of the slow pitch … the very one Bucks had won on the previous day! Leicestershire lost one of their openers in the very first over …Nicki Patel fell c&b to a triumphant Susie! Then they were stunned, as Amy took an athletic catch on the boundary to dispatch their other opening batter. 12 for 2, soon became 18-4 as Lorna clean bowled 2 more batters. Rose Anand 17 & Alison McCray 25 not out, staged a middle order comeback. It took sterling efforts in the field to keep the pressure on the batting team, Heather used all her sliding techniques on the boundary to deny the batters more runs & Georgie made sure everyone was up for the task. Captain Ros juggled the bowlers around, Harriet bowling 8 overs & taking 3 wickets, before Ros 1-12 & Alice 2-10 rattled through the remaining batting Leicestershire were all out for 71 after 23 of the allotted 40 overs.
Bucks had 40 overs to make 72, it sounded straight forward enough .,.. Alice batted 20 overs for 19 & Amy made 13, then Bucks lost a clatter of wickets as they made their way through the 50’s. But runs were added cautiously until Bucks number 10 batter, Susie Gillot strode to the crease & purposefully struck the winning run, 72-9 & Bucks were the week’s top team!
30/07/05 Hoping
to give our U12s an early county game, we found most of our U12s were
elsewhere, & so settled with Oxford for a mix of U14s downwards, for
a summer holiday game. So
it was that the 8 of Bucks took on the 10 of Oxford & Phil performed
his best team motivation chat yet !
It was the dramatic tale of how the
few from Marathon slayed the many and WON the battle! There were more
than a few puzzled expressions in Bucks changing room… the quizzical
looks …. So many thought of…“I thought we were going to play
cricket?” From
the start Miss Extras scored freely, but Alice D showed her intent asshe
bowled opener Louise Smith, while Sabah was keeping the other batters
subdued at the other end. Having borrowed
2 fielders from a kindly Oxford, the toil in the field was easier
& a couple of breaks for rain meant we could top up with extra
drinks… & inspirational team talks!
Holly
had a clean bowled with her very first ball in county cricket…
(what an easy game this is?). Susanna took1 wicket form 10 runs, Ruth
2-10, & Sabah 2-13. After 30 overs had set us 118 to win! Phil’s
instructions were…”Occupy the crease for the full 30 overs &
you’ll win this game even though you have only 8 batters” SWAN MOMENT: Holly,
bowling her first ball for Bucks… clean bowled! Result: Oxford117-9 Bucks 118-5 BUCKS U13 WIN
24/07/05 Result: Rained Off :-(
10/07/05 Papworth Everard On this
craziest of summer Sundays the ECB moved the date of their
Regional Club Tournament to this day – when Bucks were due to
play Cambridge away and Chesham Cricket Club U13 were defending their
regional crown, elsewhere! Resources
werestretched as Bucks came
up with 11 players, and
should all give multitudes of thanks to all those who drove north for
the fixture. Ringing the
changes at the top of the game, Ruth & Alice Mac were the 5th
pair to be given first opportunity
to face the shiny new ball. Taking the
openers role very seriously, Ruth stayed 10 overs for her 8 runs, seeing
a 55 run start for the team, before she departed, bowled. Ros
announced her arrival at the crease with.four 4s in her first 8 scoring
strokes & went on past her second 50 of the season to collect a
magnificent 71 not out. Lorna added to Cambridge’s difficulties with
19, then
Alice Mac ewith 17 & Heather
McNeill 9. Bucks
reached their highest total of the season from 30 overs 195-8! Ros and
Lorna were soon among the wickets, taking 3 in as many overs. But Sara
Black, for Cambridge, settled to her task & found the boundary 6
times in making 31 not out. She caused the Bucks bowlers to fret &
their fielders to keep on their toes. At the other end Cambridge batters
departed regularly with the bowlers sharing the wickets. Liz took 1
for10, Sabah 1-9,Charlotte 1-2, Lydia 1-2, Lorna 2-4 and 2 wickets for 3
runs from Ros. Bucks
winning margin was 119 runs…. Well played everyone. SWAN MOMENT: Ros pb
batting 71 not out.
Result: Bucks 195-8, Cambridge 76-8 BUCKS WIN 30/07/05
Essex won
the toss & decided to bat. Undaunted
by the lack of Ros , who was still finishing her morning soccer
tournament, the Bucks attack was hastily re-organised and took the field
with confidence. Our fielders were like terriers, chasing down every
ball as Essex made a 92 run opening partnership, before Alice Mac held a
chance off Amy’s bowling. Opener Beth MacGregor was dispatched to the
pavilion having made 51 lively runs. Alice Mac
went on to trap their number3 bat LBW, before Essex once again turned on
the heat, clocking up 51 runs off the remaining 8 overs. Ros had arrived
by now, but although she could relieve Ami S who had so ably substituted
for her in the field, she could not bowl as she had missed more than
half the overs. For Essex, Beth Langston had carried her bat through
their innings ending on a very well crafted 55 not out. Georgie
& Alice Mac started Bucks reply, they stood firm for 6 overs ,
seeing 32 runs accrue, before Georgie (16) was bowled. Ros (12) added
another productive partnership with Alice Mac & the score crept to
62. Then Alice was caught for a hard earned
28 & Amy F LBW
for 13… Bucks response faltered & lost 2 more wickets. Then Lydia
(11n.o.) & Ruth (2 n.o.) came together to see out the last 13 overs.
Bucks spirited response meant they batted through their 30 overs and put
116 runs on the board, a great step forward since the quick
defeat they suffered at the hands of Essex, earlier in the season……
Well played girls! SWAN MOMENT: Georgie…

Cambridge
won the toss & elected to field on a day that proved a good one for
long partnerships by Bucks. Alice
Mac (16) & Ros (16) put on 33 together. Then Alice Mac & Alice D
put on 38 as Alice D
registered a pb of 35 not out. But best of all was Bucks unbroken 5th
wicket stand of 46, for Alice D , this time with Geogie
(20n.o.). Bucks total of 114-4 from 30 overs was a stiff challenge. Cambridge
struggled from the start losing 3 wickets in the first 6 overs. Their
middle order defended soundly but Sabah with 3 wickets for 4 runs Alice
D 2-6 came back to spoil their progress. Ros 1-5, Alice Mac 1-5 Elspeth
1-5 and Lorna 1-2 all grabbed a
piece of the action. Cambridge were bowled out in 17 overs for 30 runs
& Bucks came out worthy winners. SWAN MOMENT: Alice D pb

Result: Bucks 114-4 , Cambridge 30-10 BUCKS U13 WIN 18/06/05 Merchant Taylors School Bucks won the toss & decided to bat on a sweltering, airless afternoon. Alice Mac creamed a couple of boundaries in the first over, before settling back into a more sober pace. Bucks lost a couple of early wickets but Alice Mac (14) joined up with Amy F(8) to put on a stand of 17, that proved to be our best of the day ! Georgie (8 n.o.) stood firm as those around her succumbed to the heat- or was it to the Middlesex attack? After 16 overs, Bucks were all out for 52. Bucks
enjoyed a splendid tea in the old pavilion, then set out to defend their
total…. Amy pouched a stunning catch in
Ros’ first over & later Alice D held on to a lofted drive,
so Lorna finished her bowling spell on 1-6 along with Ros’ 1-13. But
Middlesex collected the necessary 53 runs from 11 overs, despite
Sandie’s every endeavour behind the stumps & some magnificent
stops on the boundary by Frankie. Not forgetting the essential
ingredient for such a day… an alert 12th in the shape of
Dawn, to top up the players’ drinks & do some very necessary
substitute duties! Well done. SWAN MOMENT: Amy Fisher
for her catch to dismiss the opening bat. Team: Lorna B, Ros C, Alice D, Amy F, Georgie, Susie G, Ami S, Sandie McK, Alice Mac, Ruth M, Frankie W, 12th Dawn P
Result: Bucks 52/10, Middlesex 53/2 Middlesex U13 WIN 05/06/05
Above: Celebrations (and tierdness) after a maiden 50! With rain forecast for late afternoon, when Bucks won the toss they inserted Herts .Ros immediately set the scene with a clean bowled in her first over & Alice D followed suit in the 4th over. But Herts next two wickets built partnerships of 43 & 59 as Bucks struggled to stem the flow of runs & Herts posted a target of 130 from 30 overs. Miss Extras made a record score! Alice Mac took 2 for 25, Alice D 2-18 & Ros, considering the run fest, a remarkable 2-11 from her 6 overs. With rain threatening… but not actually there yet…Phil, ‘The Man with the Plan’… encouraged the batters to keep up the run rate, as he anticipated interruptions to play… Lorna was unfortunately run out, backing up off the first ball of the innings … just playing to orders! Enter a very purposeful number 3, Ros, who with Alice Mac & later Ruth, kept the run rate at 7.5 per over. Bucks were ahead of the pace as Ros cut lose in all directions, completing her maiden 50 from 44 balls. She was eventually run out for a pb of 64 in the 15th over with the score on 105-5….5 overs left….30 runs required….or even rain! Bucks lost wickets … still no rain… Elspeth at number10 & Dawn at 11 came together for a record 10th wicket partnership that kept our hopes alive (& our nerves on edge!) Unfortunately for Bucks & fortunately for Herts , the last wicket fell at 125 with a tantalising 10 overs unused. Tough luck Phil….good plan, we need to practice our rain dance!
SWAN MOMENT: Ros Crawley bowling 2-11 + pb batting 64
Team : Lorna B, Ros C, Alice D, Amy F, Elspeth, Sandie McK, Alice Mac, Ruth M, Heather McN, Dawn P, Frankie W. Result: Herts 134/6, Bucks 125/10 Herts U13 WIN 01/06/05 Hertfordshire
Above: The U13 lie down for some well deserved rest at the SE Counties Tournament
Above: The u13 team with ex Bucks and present England player Isa Guha Nine Counties playing 8 a side matches.
Squad: Lorna B, Ros C, Susanna C, Amy F, Sandie, Alice Mac, Ami S, Frankie W, Harriet .
Our inexperienced team were in at the deep end… the outfield was huge…. absolutely enormous, 1st XI size & this is an U13 tournament! All our fielders ran their sox off… all day!
v KENT Kent 48-1 Bucks 29-2 Kent batted slowly for their early overs & Bucks bagged their first wicket of the day when Lorna bowled the ball & Amy held the catch! With 2 overs left thei incoming batsmanquickened the scoring rate & they finished on a challenging 48.. In reply Frankie made 8 not out & Alice was run out for 6, as Bucks fell well short of the asking rate….. but we had started on our learning curve!
v HERTFORDSHIRE Bucks 50-2 Herts 51-3 Bucks batters found their touch as they picked up the push & run game, challenging the Herts fielders as they found the gaps…. Lorna hit a pb of 20 & Ros made 19 not out. Our fielders came alive, as they realised just how much acreage they had to cover, with Susanna covering more than her share of the boundary. Alice took 1 for 8, Amy 1-7 & Lorna 1-7. What a tight finish, Herts hitting the winning run off the last ball of their 8 overs.
As a result of ths first round of matches Kent, Sussex & Essex played off for places 1-3, Herts, Oxfordshire & Leicestershire played off for 4-6th places & Middlesex, Bucks & Berks played off for places 7-9
v MIDDLESEX Bucks 36-5 Middlesex 37-3 After a faltering start & losing a couple of wickets, runs started to come more easily to Sandie 8 & Amy 8, but Bucks finished on 36, perhaps the total was too small. Middlesex were taking runs at their ease until Lorna snapped up a clean bowled & Ros chipped in with 2-2, but despite tenacious fielding, Middlesex overhauled the Bucks total in their 8th over.
v BERKSHIRE Berks 28-7 Bucks 32-4 BUCKS WIN! A resolute team performance in the field followed, with Ami crashing the ball back from the deep to make a demand for ‘Howzat!?!?!?’ No luck there, but Harriet grabbed 2 wickets, Ros took 2 more & Lorna joined the party with 3! Once more Bucks lost a couple of early wickets, but Ros & Alice came together to see us safely past the Berks total.
SWAN MOMENT: Lorna Browne pb 20 batting + pb 3 for 5 bowling
Many congratulations to Essex, who beat Kent in the Final. Bucks finished the day in 8th place, but a squad who had started the day, not really knowing each other, later sorted the tactics for 8 aside on a pitch that felt like the size of the Isle of Wight. They suffered the drizzly rain & chill wind, met International star, Isa Guha, WON their last match , & had a great day out! Thanks to Karen McK for umpiring & Phil for his tactics talks, also to the drivers & supporters, (think they were parents really) who cheered Bucks on their way….. all day.
Result: BUCKS 8th 22/05/05 Braintree
Above: Bucks bowling Lorna stepped up to open the batting with Ros for this match & made an impressive job of it, using her feet well to thwart the Essex attack. Ros too relished the challenge as she cracked 3 fours, before she was bowled, giving us a good start….29 runs on the board.Essex’s varied attack kept Bucks batters pinned down Alice Mac, Ruth & later Elspeth all showed patience, waiting for the bad ball to come along. For Essex Victoria took 3 for 7 & Beth M 2-1. Bucks batted out their 30 overs … that was Stage1 of the Grand Plan, but 75 runs looked too small a total. Dawn had unfortunately been injured during our pre-match warm up, but we were grateful to Emma Gillot who stepped into the breach & became Bucks 11th fielder. Bucks were kept busy in the field and there were already 54 runs on the board when Ruth took the first wicket. Our fielders were kept busy scurrying along the boundary & Alice Mac produced a great ball to bowl Essex number 3, Beth L. But by then their total was already 73, so the game was soon wrapped up. Well played Essex an experienced side & especially well done to the talented opener Beth M, who made 37 not out. All credit to Bucks young side who responded well to the challenges & made Essex fight all the way. SWAN MOMENT: Alice Macleod Top effort, great wicket!
Team: Lorna B, Ros C, Elspeth F, Georgie, Susie G, Sabah H, Sandie McK, Alice Mac, Ruth M, Dawn P Susanna C, Emma G sub. Result: Bucks 75-5, Essex 79-2 ESSEX U13 WIN 15/05/05 Winchmore Hill CC Returning to the ever welcoming Winchmore Hill, Bucks were put into bat by Middlesex. Ros with12 & Alice quickly took the score onto 20 and then Georgie made a scampering 17, before Bucks middle order suffered a bad dose of the ‘Run out’ disease, with 4 wickets falling that way! Lorna & Sabah brought sense back to the proceedings & calmly batted out the overs. Miss Extras helped Bucks to their total of 102-9! Alice D & Ros made up the opening bowling attack. In the 4th over, an alert Susie found Ravana out of her ground & she was run out with the score still on 4. Middlesex had made their way to 75 without further loss, when a further change in the bowling surprised Claire Hollahan, now on 32, as Sabah held on to a caught & bowled half chance. Nikki Ravi put up some more resistance in making 17, but Alice D bowled her &Alice Mac took 2-22. Middlesex reached a very threatening 98-9 with 5 overs still to play. They collected 3 more singles, then on 101, Amy beat Sara Ditchfield’s bat & quick as a flash, Ruth whipped the bails off… out stumped…Bucks win by one run! SWAN MOMENT: Ruth Morley’s stumping that won the match. Winning the toss & batting first, Ros 12 & Alice 10 put on35 for the first wicket. Amy F chipped in with a chirpy 27 before being retired, to give a chance to other batters for an outing. Bucks total from 20 overs was 159-6, it looked a good challenge to set Berks. Ros opened up our bowling with a wicket in her second over. Elspeth came on first change & bagged 2 more… Ami S followed up the good work with another 2 before Heather, Susie & Ruth gained their first scalps of the season. Having hastily taken cover from a freak hailstorm, Bucks returned to wind up their first win of the season. The squad looked sharp in the field with catches from Sandie & Ros + also great backing up from Susie.
