Festival DAY 1: Turn up and play day (Gerrards Cross CC)

Presentations at the turn up and play day

Festival cricket at GX  proved amazingly popular, BIG turn out Lots of resounding hits & stunning catches too, fun for all whether playing, umpiring or sitting on the boundary soaking up the atmosphere,

As the girls arrived, they were randomly placed into teams for an inter cricket tournament. There were girls who had played 4 years of county cricket & there were others for whom today was their first try.  49 girls from 20 different schools & they had all come to GX for a day of cricket

From the start there was  sound of bat smiting ball & peals of delight as the bowlers best efforts were dispatched to the far regions of the ground (& even into adjoining gardens). There was hardly time to stop for lunch as the competition hotted up.  Everyone was determined to complete their five matches, have  a chance to hit their first boundary, take a diving catch,  or bowl  a straight ball!

Eileen Powell GX ladies captain finished her umpiring stint & presented the awards. Certificates for everyone, Lollipops for Tasha Daly’s winning team & medals for other notable performances.

Best newcomers:

Yr 9/10 Zaahra Rehman, Collette Munrelly, Yr 8 Kelly Cheste,Yr 7 Catriona Cummings. Yr 6 Frankie Watson, Yr 5 Emily Gould.

Outstanding Newcomer: Sabah Hussain.

Best Fielder :Sarah Sealy

Best Batter:   Alex Rogers

Best All Rounder:  Sadie Cole

Best Team Player: Tasha Daly

A vote of thanks was also given to Helen T, Sophie K & Tina T for their very active participation as umpires. They had just about kept good order with  a few cricket rules amongst the  rest of the days happenings.

Festival Day 2: Single Wicket (Chesham CC)

Single Wicket Cup Semi Final: Carys bowls to RosThe single wicket presentations

The day started with obvious signs of nerves as the first rounds were played. The field appears huge as you bowl your 2 overs & definitely small, with far too many fielders when it is your turn to bat!   All those watching from the pavilion were riveted to the action, comparing the tactics for this style of game, & plotting their own. Tip & run seemed the answer for a while, but then Alex went for a straight six, only to be caught on the boundary. Then flicking the ball past the keeper & daring the fielder to time her throw in precisely & to the right end too!

Roger was Master of Ceremonies, mustering the 8 fielders for each match, assembling the 2 contestants & making sure the results were entered up. He was ably assisted by umpires Wendy H, Phil Mac & Richard Preskey, who helped out with just a little bit of coaching in the early rounds, but then made sure everyone played proper cricket as well as having some serious fun.

Girls who were knocked out in their 1st round were entered into the Plate competition, where it was soon clear the competitive edge was even sharper

( if t’were possible).  The semi final  between Kelly and Emily resulted in a tie and the game had to be re-played among much nervous tension with Kelly coming out winner the second time round!

In the Plate Final Alice set a strong challenge to Kelly early on & Alice came out the victor.

Sadie started her challenge of Ros in the Final with some tight bowling. So limiting her to  a moderate target. Ros knew she had to summon all her concentration & skill. Sadie was forced into giving a straight forward catch & Ros was the outright winner…. Congratulations!

Three years of Single wicket competitions now & every year a different winner…… Alex, then  Immy & now Ros…… wonder if Ros can be the first to retain the trophy?

Festival…. 3 Counties Tournament…. Marlow CC

U15

The victorious Bucks u15 6aside team from Marlow

Above: The victorious Bucks u15 6aside team from Marlow

The 3rd year this festival has been running and with Bucks,Berks Middx, Cambs representing the U15s in a 6 a side tournament The day looked promising and Bucks got off to a great start beating Cambs. Batting first Katie Dewhurst retired at 25 and Rosie Wilkes offered support with 17. Total made 69 for 3. Cambs replied with 62 for 3.

Bucks vs Middx and Bucks powered through making for 94 with the loss of only one wicket. Katie Dewhurst again retired on 25 as did Natasha James with Jenny Banfield contributing 16 before being run out. Middx were slow with the run rate and reached 84 for 3.

The final game against Berks would decide the winner as they too had wins over Cambs and Middx. Batting first Bucks made 87 for 1. Natasha James retired at 27, Hannah Stephenson 10 and Emily Gray 12. A nail biting game with Rosie Wilkes taking one wicket and a catch and Hannah Stephenson repeating the same with one wicket and a great catch in the last over to give Bucks the win they fully deserved. Middx made 86!

U13

In  our 3rd year of U15 tournaments at Marlow  Roger realised it was high time Bucks U12s & U13s were counted in on the action. He devised & organised an 8 aside tournament  for the younger teams & invited Oxford & Berkshire along too. Each innings of 10 overs proved just enough for the game to swing from one side’s advantage to the other. We also saw unusual tactics with Phil’s U12 team all  guarding the boundary in their effort  to thwart Bucks U13’s…well at least it made them stop & think for a while, even if U13s were the eventual winners.

When the last match started Berks &  Bucks U13 were equal on points. Berks batted first, played soundly, only losing 1 wicket in making 65.  Bucks lost wickets regularly in their attempts  to keep up with  the scoring rate. Carys had stoically batted since the start & was still there at the start of the last over with Bucks still needing 6 to win. 5 runs came, scores equal. Then Cays & Tasha scampered for what they thought was the winning run… no way…Tasha was run out… scores equal & 3  balls to go. More holding of breath by players & spectators alike, until finally, yes there was a bye & both Carys & No. 7 Jade made it safely through for the winning run!
