FESTIVAL: 02'

In 2002 Bucks ran it's first ever Women's/Girls cricket festival. The week ran from Monday 22nd to Friday 26th July and included four days of cricket for girls and women both in Buckinghamshire and outside. The week was a huge success with over 130 women and girls participating.

The week started with a bang at Aylesbury CC. A Kwik cricket competition was held in the morning providing grass roots cricket for girls from all over Buckinghamshire.

The Old Bucks v New Bucks Teams

From there some of the girls were invited to stay on for the inter-district U15 eight a side competition: An afternoon of highly competitive good fun cricket. Day one was capped off with an Bucks 'Oldies'
v Bucks Juniors twenty over match, a good spirited match, with some skilful cricket in it, the 'Oldies' came out eventual winners.

Day two and the Bucks Girls U13 Single Wicket was hosted by Winchmore Hill CC. Despite some inhospitable weather the U13 turned out in force. The day proved a huge success with the knockouts from the first round of the cup automatically going into the plate competition the U13s were kept busy with a packed day of competitive cricket. Alex Rogers and Emily Grey were the eventual winners of the U13 Cup and U13 Plate competition respectively
Day three and the Festival moved to Marlow CC and Marlow Park CC, for what proved to be one of the highlights of the week. The inter-counties U15 sixa side competition.

The Bucks u15 b team at Marlow CC

With teams from Berks, Herts, Bucks, Middlesex and Cambridge competing on a glorious summers day. The cricket was fast and furious with local intercounty rivalries helping to spice up proceedings byadding an additional good spirited competitive edge to the proceedings. In a closely fought final Berkshire U15 came out as eventual victors over the hosts Bucks U15.

Ex Bucks junior and now England star Isa Guha came to present the awards to all the teams who'd participated and helped make the day the memorable one it was. In the evening Isa starred alongside some of her old Bucks team-mates in a Bucks All Stars XI v Reading Ridgeway eight a side women's match. The Reading side used their experience and expertise to come out eventual winners over the 'all stars'.

The final day of the festival at Shardloes CC brought quite possibly the sunniest day of the week with not a cloud in the sky. The morning began with a grass roots kwik cricket, young girls from the local area were able to come and get an introduction into the game of cricket. In the afternoon the Bucks U13 had a county match against the tough opposition of Essex U13 the U13 battled hard showing the benefits of the packed program of cricket they'd had over the previous week. Essex came out deserved eventual winners.

The week was capped off with a mother and daughters fun game and barbecue, the game proved to be a good fun end to a highly successful week with many of the mums surprising themselves with there cricketing skills!

All in all a great week for girls and women's cricket in Bucks. Special thanks must go to the organizers, without whom none of this would have happened: Eileen Powell and Tina Turner.
