Campaign1:
Gary Mills and Tony Poole
"Innocence
is a condition that the Home Office has great difficulty with,"
Gary Mills told his parole hearing in August this year. "The
irony is that, if I was a guilty man, I would have been released
in January." Mills, and his friend Tony Poole, both white men,
were convicted of the murder of their black associate, Hensley
'Willy' Wiltshire in Gloucester ten years ago.
Gary and Tony have maintained their innocence; they say their
convictions were secured by, at best incompetent, and at worst
a corrupt police investigation. Former Gloucester MP, Douglas
French, triggered a Police Complaints Authority investigation
into the handling of the case. The report remained secret and
French described a Police Complaints Authority investigation
into their case as a "whitewash". A channel 4 program 'Trial
And Error' exposed the inconsistencies with the trial and named
one officer, DI Trevor Gladding, as perverting the course of
justice. He sued for libel and lost.
Note:
Gary Mills and Tony Poole are now free, their convictions
quashed. The the issue is not over yet; "Nothing will
ever make me feel that justice has been done." Remarked
Tony. This is the hypocrisy of the system; "Two examples
of gross police malpractice have recently come to light. In
once case, 2 local men are fitted-up for murder and serve 14
years in prison despite being innocent. Do the police apologize?
Do they, fuck. Is there an enquiry in the this miscarriage of
justice? Is there, fuck. In another case some stand-up comedian
gatecrashes a party and within a day there are investigations
all over the place. There is a full and unreserved apology and
much groveling and scraping from the police." More on this
