Family summaries:



Johannes Freidrich Niemann came to America from Germany, to avoid conscription. The Catholic Church was being persecuted by the Kulturkampf policies of Bismarck. Johann left his sister, Sophia (Nieman), in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, Germany. They corresponded for awhile, then, nothing more was heard from her.

John Frederick and Mary Anna

John Frederick married Mary Anna (Tillman) at St. Henry's parish in East St. Louis, Ill., on January 23, 1872. The celebrant was her cousin, Fr. Christopher Koenig. At the time of her marriage, she was his housekeeper, and her husband, John Frederick, was working on the construction of the Eads Bridge across the Mississippi River, connecting East St. Louis, Ill. to St. Louis Missouri. She left the rectory, and soon they began to have a family. Their early years together were marked with sadness, because of infant deaths.

Eight children born to this union:
It was customary to use the names, John, Mary, and Anna as first names, although the children were not always called by their first names.
1 John Kristopher Nieman was born on November 9, 1872, and died September 5, 1874, less than two years old.
2 John Frederick Niemann, named for his father, was born on April 24, 1875, lived a scant 7 months and died on December 5, 1875.
3 Mary Elizabeth (Nieman)/Mrs. Harry Dauphin, was born on July 14, 1878. She lived a full life and died on September 8, 1949.
4 John Henry Nieman, called "Henry", was born on January 4, 1881, and died on his birthday in 1912, Chicago Heights, Ill. at the age of 31.
5 Anna Margaret "Annie" Nieman was born on March 22, 1883, and died June 25, 1962. She remained single all her life.
6 William August Nieman was born on January 14, 1886, and died on December 11, 1958.
7 John Bernard Nieman lived for two months, from April 2, 1887 to June 21.
8 The baby of the family, Anna Louise "Lou" (Nieman)/Mrs. Arthur Butler, was born two days after Christmas on December 27, 1889. She passed away on August 29, 1955.

John Henry died, at the age of 31, soon after Eugene was born. Pearl then married Emil Dekum. They had no additional children. Emil was godfather for Ceil (Nieman) Gray when she was baptised as an infant. He is related to Msgr. Cletus Cunningham, who graduated from Central Catholic High School in East St. Louis. Cletus was in the same class with Bob Gray (1917-78), who later married Ceil.

William August Nieman married Sarah Mary (Evans) (Dixon) on September 12, 1908, at St. Elizabeth's Church on 48th and Ridge in East St. Louis, Ill.
Four children born to this union:
*Frederick William Nieman was born June 19, 1909. He was baptised at St. Elizabeth's Church by Father Hoppman. Fred died on December 12, 1979.
*James Wanlass Nieman was born on February 1, 1912 and was baptised at Saint Elizabeth's Church. He died on Good Friday, 1978.
*Mary Ann "Marian" Frances (Nieman)/Mrs. Glen Claussen was born on September 29, 1914, and was also baptised at St. Elizabeth's Church. She died at Swansea Nursing home, on March 13, 1996;
*Cecilia Elizabeth "Ceil" (Nieman)/Mrs. Robert Gray was born on September 11, 1920 and was baptised by Fr. Peter Engel at Saint Elizabeth's Church. She died in her Apartment on Sanctuary Road, in Prescott, Arizona, on August 13, 1991 just before what would have been her 50th wedding anniversary. She was near her 71st birthday.
Her patron saint is Saint Cecilia.

*Fred and Vera

Frederick William Niemann married Veronica "Vera" Adele (Klein) on July 26, 1938 at St. Philip's Church in Edgemont. Their cousin Fr. Christopher Goelz was the celebrant. At the wedding reception, Vera gave the first piece of cake to him instead of sharing it with Fred. Marian made the cake. Ceil (Niemann) was the maid of honor and Lester Klein was best man.
Four children born to their union:
William Joseph Niemann "Billy or Bill" was born on April 29, 1939 in Belleville. He was the second grandchild of William and Sarah.
Christopher Edward Niemann was born June 15, 1940 in Belleville. He was the fourth grandchild of William and Sarah. Bill and Chris were both born in Belleville, Illinois. Chris wrote a tribute to Bill.
Marilyn Adele (Niemann) Kinsella was born in East Saint Louis, Illinois, on August 19, 1947.
Melissa Ann (Niemann) Rist-Carter was born on November 18, 1954 in Belleville, Ill.

Fred worked for Monsanto Chemicals as a chemist. Vera liked to write and was a published journalist. She had a column on families in the Belleville News-Democrat. Her daughter Marilyn became a professional storyteller, and also writes and performs at Edwardsville Public Library.

William Joseph Niemann married Lucille "Pat" (Parker) on December 28, 1963 in Wichita Falls Kansas.
Nine Children born to this union:
Sandor Shawn Niemann was born August 3, 1965, in Tucson, Arizona where Bill was stationed. At Christmas, the family went to Prescott Az., to visit Bill's Aunt and Godmother, Ceil Gray and her family. Bill was transferred to Flotrida.
Kyra Adele Niemann was born July 29, 1967;
Trista Ann Niemann was born July 30, 1968 at Cocoa Beach, Florida. Then Bill was transferred to California.
Maia Agatha Niemann was born on January 10, 1970 at Vandenberg AFB in California.
Skylar Frederick Niemann was also born there on June 16, 1971. Bill was then transferred to Germany.
Tatjana Alyce was born in Bonn, Germany on December 6, 1972. Sklar Frederick died in Bonn on August 14, 1973, at the age of two.
Parker Pat Niemann was born November 15, 1976;

Chris taught high school for a few years, and later was a Math teacher at Belleville Area College.
Chris Nieman was divorced from Robin and married Genevieve (3-1-1941-). They live in Sarasota, Florida. Chris now enjoys playing bridge, tennis, and most of all, working on a 150-year-old math problem called the Riemann Hypothesis. He bought Genevieve a convertible for her birthday in 2004, their Avalon was facing major repair bills. Gen says, "It's the tyranny of economics."

Christopher Edward "Ted" Niemann, Jr. married Melissa Kaye ( ) Magruder in September of 2003.
Ted graduated from Althoff Catholic High School in 1988 and attended Southwestern Illinois College. He is employed by Callison Distributing in Belleville, IL.
Melissa is the daughter of Jerry and Linda Dinning of Benton, KY.
A 1986 graduate of Kankakee High School, she graduated from Kankakee Community College in 1990, and Sanford Brown College in 1995. She is employed by Favorite Nurses in Fairview Heights, Illinois.

4) Gigi Geiger (9/19/1970-) has been married twice. She has two children by her first husband, Jeff Simpson (Jeff was killed in a one car accident in 1999):
a girl, Nalani Simpson,
and a boy, Drew Simpson,
After Jeff died, Gigi moved to Sarasota, bought a nice home for herself and carved out a new life for herself. She met Howard Weinstein in 2001, and they were married in January of 2003.
