Through the basketball program, we hope to provide athletic activity which
fosters values of team work, cultural awareness, and community involvement on the part of our young people. We envision the program as
a means to greater ends of building self-esteem, confidence, relationships, and personal growth in the context of a spiritual community.
As such, we see our basketball program as a part of a variety of youth development programs now sponsored by the church. In a time
where there is much social commentary on the place of sports in our culture, we hope that our basketball program, along with the
influence of spiritual values, can provide our young people with the foundation to be leaders and active participants in community life.
Toward these ends, we hope that we can share these values and that new opportunities for community building can take place among
our youth. There is much that we can do together! As an organization, the Buena Vista UMC Basketball Program strongly believes in the development of its youth and as such has incorporated the underlying principles and philosophy in its Mission and Vision Statement. Our mission is to provide all youth and their families the opportunity to play basketball in a safe environment that fosters values of team work, cultural awareness, and community service. We also believe that the success of the program is not based solely on the win/loss record but involves the building of relationships, the creation of friendships and the development of the competitive spirit through the values that are the cornerstone of the Buena Vista UMC Youth Basketball Program.
