Victorians in your local library.
If you are
trying to find out about life in Victorian times there is no better place to
start than your local
library. Most libraries will have a wealth of information to help you with
any projects or schoolwork that you have been given on the Victorian era.
Material will include books which can be borrowed and taken home but also
reference material such CD-Roms and newspapers. In addition many libraries
offer computers linked to the internet and this will provide you with a whole
new area in which to explore your chosen topic.
When you first
go into the library ask a member of staff to show where the computer catalogue
is as you can use to catalogue to track down the material you need.
Any member of staff should be able to show you how to use the catalogue but you can try yourself by typing in `Victorian’ in the `Subject’ section. You will then be shown a number of different subjects to do with Victorian times such as religion, industry and daily life. You can then choose the one you are interested in and a list of the books relating to that topic will come up on the screen.
If you want to
look at Victorian life in your local area you need to go to a local studies
library or local record office or archive in your area. This is where all the
historic information for the local area is kept and usually staff at the
library will be able to tell you where the nearest one is.
