Victorians – a day out in London

Want to find out what life in Victorian Britain was like? There are museums and other places to visit, which will give you an idea.

 

The Victoria & Albert Museum.

 

Concentrating on art and design through the ages, surprisingly this isn’t an obvious choice if you want to find out about Victorian life but until the 29th July 2001 there is a special exhibition Inventing new Britain: the Victorian vision This exhibition looks at Royalty, Society, Nature, the World, and Army and Technology. Look on the website for details of special Victorian activities for children from Victorian magic tricks to lace-making.

 

The National Museum of Childhood

 

This is a free museum, and includes toys, games and also nursery equipment to give you an idea what it would have been like to be a child in Victorian times. Look on the website for special events and activities.

 

Pollocks Toy Museum

 

This museum is situated near to Goodge Street tube in two small houses and includes Victorian toys and games and toy theatre performances during the school holidays. Check out the website for details.

 

Florence Nightingale Museum

 

Find out more about this famous Victorian, not for the squeamish, this museum has a life-size reconstruction of a ward in a  Crimean hospital as well as exhibitions on Florence Nightingale’s life.

 

The Ragged School

 

The Ragged School Museum is housed in two canal side warehouses used by Dr Barnardo to house the school. In a recreation of a classroom from the Victorian period, visitors can experience how Victorian children were tought. There are also displays on local history and life in the East End.
