BIOGRAPHICAL DEPARTMENT
32 JAMES TOMLINSON was born in North Carolina, 1762, and in 1788
married Sarah Wafford by whom was born three sons and two daughters.
Sarah was born 1762 and died 1810. He was afterwards married to a
Miss Bevil by whom was born three daughters. He is described by
those who knew him as being of medium height, rather heavy build with
light blue eyes. While not a member of any church, he had been
baptized in the Episcopalian church and held to the doctrines of that
church. He was a strict observer of the sabbath as a story told
by Mary Heath will indicate. It was the custom in the south to go courting
on Saturday night and a young man found in James Tomlinson's home
on Sunday morning had to remain over until Monday morning.
Aunt Sallie Lain told of one of her beaus who had to remain over and during
the day, Sunday, imbibed too freely of the boiled cider kept on hand
and that night met with his Waterloo and Aunt Sallie had a disagreeable
washing to put out the next day. While the young man may have
smiled again it is said he never came back again. It might have been
a trick of the old gentleman to prevent an undesirable son-in-law, as
such tricks are often played as the best way to prevent an undesirable
marriage is to over do in encouraging it and to encourage it is to
fight against it.
James Tomlinson moved to Indiana 1832 and located on the farm
now owned by Isaac Williams, southwest of Muncie where he died
Feb. 12, 1841 and was buried in the Heath graveyard, one mile south.
