Michelle Jacquet DeSevren Branch (born July 2, 1983) is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist.

She was born 7 weeks premature in Phoenix, Arizona. Michelle is named after a Beatles's song. She is of Irish, French, Dutch, Mexican, and Indonesian descent. She has an older half-brother, David, and a younger sister, Nicole. She attended Red Rock High School.

She first wanted to write songs as soon as she hit her teens, beginning to write shortly after that. She asked forâ€”and gotâ€”a guitar on her 14th birthday, and later signed up for vocal classes. In high school, she made arts her focus, choosing classes that augmented and enhanced her creativity. All throughout high school Michelle was writing extensivelyâ€”in fact, she claims she wrote "Sweet Misery" during an algebra class. She never finished high school, opting instead to follow her dreams and become a singer/songwriter. She played clubs for years, releasing Broken Bracelet independently.

She was eventually discovered by Maverick while opening for Hanson, signing a record deal in December of 2000. Her first major hit, "Everywhere," hit radio in 2001, and was followed by another hit, "All You Wanted", both from her album The Spirit Room. In 2002, she appeared as lead vocalist on Carlos Santana's song "The Game of Love" (not to be confused with the Mindbenders song of the same name). The song went on to win a Grammy Award for best pop collaboration. In 2003 she released her second full-length album Hotel Paper. The first single "Are You Happy Now" again jumped on the top 20 of the Billboard single chart.

She gained acclaim alongside such artists as Avril Lavigne and Vanessa Carlton as a young woman performing pop music that was not "bubblegum," or marketed based on the artist's sexy image rather than musical integrity. However, recent steamy photoshoots with magazines like Maxim and Blender have put her previous clean cut, less sexualized image into question, in a fashion broadly reminiscent of fellow American pop stars Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Branch is also noted for writing or co-writing all of her songs on her albums. Critics have commended her thoughtful lyrics and interesting guitar chords. Michelle's music influences are The Beatles, Led Zepplin, Queen, Aerosmith, Cat Stevens and Joni Mitchell. She plays several instruments like the cello, the guitar, the accordion, the drums and the piano. Her nicknames are Meech and Chelle. Her height is 5'6" (1.68m). She has nine tattoos. She mainly uses Taylor and Gibson guitars. Her favorite is a Taylor 614ce, and she currently uses a Gibson Hummingbird. She owns 14 guitars and is currently working on a project with her friend and backup singer Jessica Harp called The Wreckers. Their album is due in June 2005.

On May 23, 2004, she married her band's bass player, Teddy Landau, who is 19 years older than her, in Mexico and is expecting her first child in August 2005.

Notes on Vanessa Carlton and the making of Harmonium

"Harmonium" is Vanessa Carlton's follow up to her multi-platinum debut Be Not Nobody, which had the number one single "A Thousand Miles" and top ten single "Ordinary Day". She wrote it while on tour and on sojourn in San Francisco. Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind produced Harmonium and it was recorded in San Francisco and Los Angeles over the last year. "Harmonium" takes its name from a vintage instrument which combines piano and flute. To Vanessa it means bringing difficult, chaotic things, things that have trouble fitting in one's life together to achieve harmony. Each of Harmonium's ingenious and individual tracks are unified by the talents of this unique musician and the purity of her voice. The result is a wholly authentic new album from Vanessa Carlton, and it marks her emergence as a musical stylist.
Studio Hallways

While on reprieve from tracking basics at the Record Plant in Los Angeles, Stephan Jenkins returned to the studio with Lindsey Buckingham who had praise for Vanessa's first album and curiosity for her new work. Soon the studio was filled with Stevie Nicks and Pharrell Williams; Kanye West dropped in as well. Lindsey ended up playing acoustic guitar on Vanessa's first single, 'White Houses,' and Pharrell sang back ups on 'Who's To Say'. These moments of spontaneity and community encapsulate the spirit in which Harmonium was recorded.
Making a Band

Two new factors influenced the arrangements and basic tracking of Harmonium: first, a year and a half of touring with her band developed Vanessa's empathy and nuance with other players; and second, Stephan and Vanessa arranged the songs together on drums and piano. "It was a band vibe in the way we put songs together,"it makes the album sound somehow younger and more organic," Vanessa has said. The spark being set so early in the song's arrangement allowed them to experiment without snuffing out the song's intent.
Sonatas and Improv

The signature of Harmonium comes from Vanessa's left hand. Classically trained from the age of two by her mother, Vanessa developed in a relaxed atmosphere. "I would learn a piece like Chopin, and then forget part of it and then make up a new ending myself." Her mother gave her the tools to explore. Piano was a world Vanessa could step into and control while growing up. "I would envelope myself in music, and that's how I navigated New York when I moved on my own so young. Music was my companion and my escape." It was also her expression. She improvises over classical voicings and time signatures, so she's not anchored by the usual suspects in pop progressions. Her style always finds the new harmonic and it gets nurtured on this album.
Pressure

The common wisdom on follow-ups to successful debuts is: more of the same. Harmonium did just the opposite. Time moves and so has Vanessa. The songs for her first album Be No Nobody were written when she was seventeen and it was an inspired effort, not a formula. She made Harmonium at twenty-three after so much change. "So many second albums are made in fear. I couldn't make a new album based on remaking the last one, and I was not afraid to make an album based on what feels fresh and reflective to me. I think I realize only now that I really did take a risk."
Inner Landscape and Big Vistas

The music on this album goes from the painful intimacy of an uncertain breath, to grandly cinematic gestures of tympanis and a forty voice choir. Harmonium is about musical landscapes. Some are the inner landscapes of confessions and dreams; some are like musical expressions of mountains. Each song has it's own sensibility and none of them feels over thought or second guessed. A&M president Ron Fair: "If Be Not Nobody was wearing a cocktail dress, Harmonium is wearing jeans and a vintage shirt."
Co-writing and Collaborating

It was Interscope chairman, Jimmy Iovine that suggested Vanessa and Stephan write together. During a meeting where Vanessa played Jimmy the first five songs from Harmonium, Jimmy recognized similarities to his relationship as a producer with Stevie Nicks. "Stephan was my first successful co-write and he was careful not to foist anything on me. Instead he showed me that what is precious to me can be shared, not just protected, and I am a better songwriter because of it."
Lyrics

Vanessa's lyrics are more streams of consciousness. "I use my voice and words as another instrument and the words then tell me what the song is about." From the blissed out melancholy of songs like 'Afterglow' and 'San Francisco', to the bizarre noir of 'She Floats' and the secret track, 'The Wreckage', Vanessa conveys sensations that cannot be separated from their melody to be comprehended.
A Dancer Again

This year with the help of her choreographer Vanessa reclaimed her lyrical dance style. It is showcased in the video for 'White Houses', a study in different sides of Vanessa's personality making peace with the other, finding Harmonium. One can see what dancing again has done for Vanessa. The return of dance in Vanessa's life shows in her new ease and confidence. It changes touring as well. "I used to feel rooted to the piano, now I'm going to dance on top of it."

OVERVIEW
PAROKYA NI EDGAR is a bunch of guys, six to be exact, who unexpectedly find themselves in a proper band, with a proper recording contract with a proper record company (Universal Records), which gives them a proper "recording career". PAROKYA NI EDGAR, or PNE for short, is Alfonso "Chito" Miranda and Francis Vincent "Vinci" Montaner on vocals, Darius "Dar" Semana and Gabriel "Gab" CheeKee on guitars, Buhawi "Buwi" Meneses on bass and Ferdinand "Dindin" Moreno on drums. For a bunch of guys who don't take themselves seriously, this proper recording career has yielded them three triple-platinum albums - their debut album, Khangkhungkherrnitz,
the follow-up Buruguduystunstugudunstuy, and their latest, Gulong Itlog Gulong (translation: roll, egg, roll) - and gold-certified Christmas album, Jingle Balls! (Silent Night, Holy Cow!). These four albums, in turn, have yielded them chart-topping hits such as "Buloy", "Halaga", "Picha Pie", "Lutong Bahay", "Tatlong Araw", "Sayang", "Silvertoes", "Maniwala Ka Sana", "Please Don't Touch My Birdie", "Inuman Na" and, of course, "Harana", the video for which coveted for them the 1999 MTV Southeast Asia Viewer's Choice Award. For the latter, PNE bested nominees from the region (Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia) to be one of only two Filipino artists to covet the Moonman, as the MTV trophy is widely-known.
PAROKYA NI EDGAR have also picked up NU107 Rock Awards' "Artist (Band) of the Year" honours for two consecutive years (1999 and 2000), as well as a number of Awit Awards (the Philippine Grammys) nods. Their debut album, Khangkhungkherrnitz was on the shortlist for the 1997 Awit Awards "Album of the Year" honors. Top FM radio stations RX 93 and DWLS 97.1 both picked "Harana" (off the second album) as 1998 "OPM Song of the Year". PNE repeated the feat in 2000 with the song "Halaga". In a recent poll conducted by MTV Asia, PAROKYA NI EDGAR were only one of two OPM acts to be regarded as the coolest bands the Filipino youth are listening to these days. This June 2001, PAROKYA NI EDGAR capped their illustrious career by bagging the "Favorite Group Video" award for their straight year at the MTV Philippines Video Music Awards.
PAROKYA NI EDGAR released their fifth album in February 2002 called, â€œEdgar, Edgar Musikahanâ€ the follow-up to their multi-platinum fourth album. The first single is â€œSwimming Beachâ€. This album gave them two awards at the 2002 MTV Pilipinas Awards and got them a nomination at the 2003 MTV Asia Awards.
â€œBigotilyoâ€ , the sixth album was released in July 2003. Featuring the hit single, â€œMr. Suaveâ€ that captured the hearts and ears of both young and old listeners. Finally winning the 2004 MTV Asia Awards for â€œFavorite Artists â€“ Philippinesâ€, this only proves that PAROKYA NI EDGAR is still super-hot in the local music scene today.
PAROKYA NI EDGAR is currently promoting their latest album, â€œHalina Sa Parokyaâ€, which was released last August 2005
For a band who doesn't take themselves seriously, PAROKYA NI EDGAR is more than prepared to take off into this new millenium.

EARLY BEGINNINGS
When the music community first saw PAROKYA NI EDGAR in 1993, one would have hardly expected that a bunch of class clowns would ever get this far eight years later. The original incarnation of this band, then known as COMIC RELIEF, were classmates at the Ateneo High School - Chito Miranda, Vinci Montaner, Gab CheeKee, Mikko Yap and Jeric Estaco. These group of friends were widely-known around campus as the class buffoons of 4-H. Like any new band with a couple of guitar chords under their belt, their first repertoire consisted of mainly covers. They'd dress up in women's clothes donated for typhoon and earthquake victims, sing off-key during poetry sessions or fool around with the lyrics to classic rock songs (Cat Stevens' Father and Sons, Bob Dylan's Knockin' On Heaven's Door, among them) during variety shows. They later changed their name to PAROKYA NI EDGAR, which came from an answer Jeric Estaco gave during Philippine History class, when the teacher asked him where Rizal's fictional hero, Crisostomo Ibarra, was educated. The rest, as they always say, is musical history. After high school, Chito Miranda, Vinci Montaner and Gabriel hooked up with batchmate Ferdinand Moreno, Chito's neighbor Buhawi Meneses and UP Fine Arts classmate Darius Semana to round up the present line-up. With 3-4 songs under their arms, the group auditioned at seminal rock club, Club Dredd on April 4, 1994. Despite their then obviously limited technical skills, PAROKYA NI EDGAR was an instant sensation. Word quickly spread of their irreverent, outrageous, wacky performances among the club's habitues. They began to get invitations to open for top alternative bands, the Eraserheads and The Youth among them. Not long after, Universal Records signed them up.

The Eraserheads are one of the most important artists in the history of Pinoy rock music. Often described as the Philippines' own Beatles, The Eraserheads brought their melodic guitar rock and keen wit from Manila's underground scene and into the mainstream. The group can be compared to Nirvana in how they knocked superficial pop from the airwaves and the charts, triggering a wave of commercial acceptance for alternative music. The Eraserheads formed at University of the Philippines in 1989. Schoolmates Ely Buendia (lead vocals, guitar), Marcus Adoro (lead guitars), Buddy Zabala (bass), and Raymund Marasigan (drums) played covers at several universities. The band became disillusioned at how poorly they remade other artists' songs so they began writing their own. In 1990, The Eraserheads started performing at the alternative hotbed ~Club Dredd, quickly establishing an impressive fan base. However, record labels were not interested in the group, and their demo album, Pop-U, faced continual rejection until the band produced a new version of one of its tracks, capturing the attention of BMG Records (Pilipinas). In 1993, The Eraserheads released their first album, Ultraelectromagneticpop, for the label. The record was a bona fide smash. Just as Nirvana achieved stardom in America with stripped-down rock and an unassuming image, The Eraserheads topped the charts in Manila with their independent spirit and distinctive sound. In 1996, The Eraserheads' album Cutterpillow went gold via pre-release sales before record stores even had copies; the album was eventually certified platinum eight times, the highest-selling album ever in the Philippines. In 1998, the band extended its visibility beyond the Philippines by releasing a compilation of remastered greatest hits, Aloha Milkyway, to the Asian market. In 1999, The Eraserheads even received limited airplay on the influential Los Angeles alternative rock station KROQ. In 2001, The Eraserheads released Carbon Stereoxide.
