California's Route 173

Route 173 is from Route 138 to Route 18 via Lake Arrowhead. [CS&HC Sec. 473]

Status

Unpaved from Arrowhead Lake Road south of Hesperia to Rock Camp Station. It is California's only unpaved state highway.

    Points of Interest

    There's only one: Lake Arrowhead at Route 189. Some great places to sleep in on Route 173 include the Broken Arrow Bed and Breakfast, Fleur de Lac European Inn, and the Willow Creek Inn. If you want to sleep and dine, visit the Saddleback Inn, featuring a restaurant called The Nest.

  • Route 138 north of Silverwood Lake to Route 18 south of Lake Arrowhead: The KPRA advised for this route is less than 30 feet. Includes 5 miles of rutted dirt road less than 9' wide at points.

    Notes

    Route 173 enters the San Bernardino National Forest. Its headquarters is located in San Bernardino. For more information, you can call them at (909)382-2600.

    Mind the dirt. This route is quite popular with off-road vehicle enthusiasts.
