    Route 161 crosses the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, part of the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuges.

    South of Route 161's end on Route 139 is Tulelake. The Lava Beds National Monument, as well as the Klamath Basin NWR, is headquartered there. Nearby is the Tule Lake NWR, as well as a former Japanese internment camp.

    Notes

    Route 161, which is entirely in both the F&E System and the Scenic Highways list, runs entirely on Stateline Road. The route runs to the side of the Oregon state line. Pretty odd for a California state highway.
