397.  Route 97 is from Route 5 in Weed to the Oregon state line near
Dorris.

      Signed as a U.S. highway.

History
      Routes 95, 97, and 199 are the only remaining U.S. Routes in
California that weren't affected by the legislative changes of 1964.

Notes
      Where Route 97 begins at Route 5 in Weed, there is a Chevron
with a mini-mart (the station's name is Mountain View), a McDonald's,
Burger King, and something that's not part of a franchise: Silva's
Family Restaurant.
      Route 97 is quite popular with truckers, since it offers a smoother
grade than Route 5.
