Ship's Log(10-11 May 2005, Panama City, Fl to Tarpon Springs Fl Transit)
Looking good we're finally rocking and rolling, but minus the sails. Finding sailing weather is not easy work. Well yesterday, 10 May, Tues, the winds finally kicked in sometime mid day. Thought our transit was going to be all motoring, but finally got some decent winds, as they were kicking up to 17-18 knots and out of the SE just like Panama City's News Herald promised - hoorah for the paper - as the NOAA broadcast is always wrong, or so it seems.
Two shrimpers back to back and anchored in 65 foot water - must be sleeping before the night time work We hoisted the main, unfurled the jib and were making time, up to 7.2 and better knots. We never buried the rail but it was close. We stayed heeled to port on a starboard tack, passed the point, and headed more to the east. Not much rocking, but some things like a cup or two took a spill, but we were cranking. Jim, wanted to put a reef in the main at sunset, but decided against it as the winds had backed off to a manageable 12 knots. Winds lasted to late after midnight, when they diminished steadily. whereupon it was back to motor sailing - bummer.
Transit to Tarpon Springs - Gulf is flat and easy, just before those 18 knot winds arrive This morning , 11 May, Weds, we're about 1/2 way to Tarpon Springs, and the Gulf is flat - not perfectly smooth - but it's like a big lake. We still hope to make Tarpon Springs Thursday morning, but with all that speed we won't have to wait on day break, as we have slowed down to our original arrival time. Late afternoon, same day, the winds finally did pick up a bit and we starting running with jib and main with light winds from the SW. Jim tried his hand at some fishing as we seemed to be crossing the Gulf Stream - saw sea weed, and some kinda fish boiling the surface. Up to this point (spinner is still trailing behind us) Jim hasn't had a bit of luck. Still a bit ahead of schedule and we hope to arrive Tarpon Springs after day break Thurs. May have to slow even this slow lazy run before the wind. Arrived safely Tarpon Springs City Marina, 10am, 12 May, Thurs.
