Ship's Log

(8- 9 May, 2005 Panama City Alabama)

Sunday, 8th of May, a new day finds us in a new city, Panama City.  As you remember we departed Pensacola about 2pm Saturday, and started out after the channel on a easterly heading under sail.  Unfortunately, those winds didn't last, and we were soon motor sailing in the late afternoon.  After the winds picked up and drew back to our starboard quarter (a sea breeze basically), we dropped the motoring and continued on at a good clip - 5 to 6 knots.  Later on in the evening those winds died down, whereupon we started motorsailing again.  Those winds eventually shifted to our port bow and we furled in the jib and sheeted in the main, and kept motoring.

Jim checking out the huge trawler tied up behind us

Throughout the night we stood 3 hour watches off and on.  Nothing of note took place except for our sighting of the mystery sailboat (the Fortuna?).  But as you can see from below Fortuna was still trailing behind us.  She did get in to Panama City Metropolitan Marina - though now it's the mystery couple as we haven't seen the boat owners yet (probably asleep).  Fortuna is custom built with the exception of the fiberglass hull - note the wooden mast ( not sure what kind of wood).

We got into the Panama City Metropolitan Marina about 9am or so.  Refueled, and moved over to our slip.  The trawlers surrounding us are huge.  Not sure exactly what they do - but they sure carry the tonnage.  If sailing couples ride any of these big boys they have a hell of a fuel bill.

Fortuna, the mystery ship, shows up behind us after Jim and I got back from the car rental place

Spent the afternoon doing laundry, checking e-mail at a nearby library and getting some things organized.  Ran late afternoon around Panama City downtown.  They were holding an arts festival, which Jim checked out, but I missed due to laundry duties.  Saw a fairly good used book store in the downtown area which I hope to check out later.

La Trucha's dingy which we had set up around Mobile Bay, meaning we blew it up with bellows

Today is 10th of May, Tues, (and we departed city marina Panama City about 9am or so.  Got some fuel which really cost us as we had a fuel imbroglio upon getting in Sunday morning. We put in 8 gallons of gasoline vice diesel fuel in a 46 gallon tank - not good - we spent Monday afternoon pumping her dry, rinsing with diesel and putting things back in order. Out of pocket expenses:  46+8 gallons of gas wasted.  Diesel here was $2.05/gal so with the  overnight at $1.25/foot the total was $159 for a 2 night stay and diesel, lots of diesel.

Plans now are to do a 2 overnighter to Tarpon Springs, Fl with the winds still against us looks like we're gonna have to motor some more.  So ist das leben!
