Ship's Log

(6-7 May, 2005 Pensacola, Florida)

Got up Friday morning still at anchor in our little shared anchorage cove.  Since I had been aboard several days at anchor each night in various spots, I took the dingy out for an exercise run.  As always, people always stop and ask if I need help (which is nice as people on the water really look after one and another)

Anyway, upon return Jim was already making preparations to hoist anchor, as he wanted to move toward the Pensacola jetty, as it was a good jump off spot for making an overnight run to Panama City.  We got underway well after our new found friends on the Fortuna had already left.  We got there without any problems - the anchorage was just underneath the Pensacola Naval Air Station approach pattern - the junior flyers were busy doing touch and goes.

The area itself was great - we stayed there for the night.  The beach beside us was in use as several families had set up shop with tents.  Boaters were in abundance as well.  Summer weather was the rule.  We also found Fortuna again, and unfortunately she was hard aground off the beach.  We offered our help, but Bud Fortuna's skipper was going to wait on next morning's high tide.  He was right, as the next high tide was all he needed.  He got underway sometime in the morning before us, for Panama City.  We kept hoping to catch him enroute; we sited a sailboat with a big lead on us later, but could never identify the boat as the Fortuna.

Our plan was to get underway around 2pm since we didn't want to get to Panama during the night.  We made preps Saturday morning to make La Trucha ready for sea.  That meant getting the dingy and motor aboard, getting cushions and miscellaneous items secured and stowed.  Weather cooperated great.  After we got from behind the jetty through the channel into open seas we found a sailing regatta going on.  We bent sail as soon as we could that meant making the penultimate buoy, turning to the east and Panama City, hoisting main and unfurling the jib.  We were making fairly good time for awhile 6 or so knots - not as fast as our first sail in Pontchartrain.  But it sure was great to be sailing again after all that motoring for so many days past.
