Ship's Log
(5 - 6 May, 2005 Mobile Bay Alabama)
We sit at anchor once again, after departing Biloxi, Miss
early yesterday morning (Weds.). We dropped the lines idled up to the
fuel pier sometime before 7am, took on about $30 of fuel (diesel here was
$1.86 as compared to New Orleans $2.36) got my credit card receipt from the
Harbor Master for the 3 night stay with water/electric $124.80, and off we
went.
Winds again were lousy, we took off for Mobile Bay with the
that big ole 55hp Volvo running us about 5 knots or better. Seas were
right into us too - we took some good water over the bow - enough to get
some water through 2 or so hatch covers (one which was not secured for sea),
thereby soaking my sheet and Jim's settee cushions. Things were
otherwise going hunky dory, until we got in the channel for Mobile Bay - Jim
was being passed by this Coast Guard cutter who was coming in behind us hard
and fast. He wanted to pass to port on the left side of the rather
narrow channel. Jim slowed down to let him pass, lost some steerage
way, and pulled left. The Coastee slowed down and waited, and
eventually passed us, picking up speed again. Those good ole boys over on
the cutter were too busy chewing their tobacco to idle up to those big 50
cals on the foredeck - for which I was thankful.

We motored up Mobile Bay for a bit turning again into the
Intra Coastal. We kept motoring on right up until dark - continuously
looking for a place to either anchor or pull over to a bank located on some
deeper water and tie off to some trees, an old barge, dock or whatever.
Pickings were slim so we held on until reaching this little cove off the
Intra Coastal. Surprisingly (for me), there were about 4 sets of
anchor lights, as 4 other sailboats had arrived before us. We dropped
the plow anchor, and as she held with some 40 or 50 foot of chain scope we
cooked some beanie weenies and ate outside in the cockpit, listening to
dolphins snorting for air as they swam through the cove.

I fell asleep in a heartbeat after finishing the dishes,
ready to spend sometime at the hook the next day; that being Thursday.
Since the winds were still against us, we might be staying in this little
cove for quite some time.

This is our second night (today being Friday, 6 May) at
anchor and we're making plans to depart this evening - tie up to a jetty and
then wait for night fall.
Yesterday Jim and I visited Pirates cove for lunch - which
meant blowing up the dink (dingy). Anyway, uneventful ride over.
Also, Jim met a cruising couple also sharing the anchorage with us, Bud and
Lois, of the Fortuna (out of Ca and headed to New England).
