Studies reveal that men who have several close friends are generally happier and live longer,

Read More Here • "The one area in modern man friendships where we still see strong emotional bonds, is in the military. One of the reoccurring themes in stories about a man’s military life, are the friendships that they established while in the service. Working in largely all-male teams, in life and death situations, creates intense bonds and a true brotherhood. Soldiers will never leave a man behind, and are willing to die, to protect their comrades. -- (Read More Here)

Part 1. Real Bears. Bears are a group of carnivores known for their burly build, impressive agility and increasingly threatened conservation status. There are eight species of bears that inhabit a wide range of habitats throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia. Although the bear family includes the largest living land carnivores, many species survive on a diet that consists largely of vegetation.

There are eight species of bears alive today that range in size from the large brown bears and polar bears, which can weigh as much as 2200 and 1500 pounds respectively, to the comparatively smaller giant pandas and sun bears, which weigh less than 300 pounds apiece.

Bears are large dog like mammals found all around the world.

Most bears are nocturnal, solitary animals only really congregating during the bears mating season. The mother bear will then raise her cubs until they too, are old enough to live on their own. Bears generally have an excellent sense of smell and are also fantastic at climbing trees, swimming and are able to run at speeds of up to 35 mph for short periods of time.

All bears are generally classified as carnivores but most species of bear today have adapted various herbivorous traits. For example, the giant panda has a diet that primarily comprises of bamboo. Most species of bear tend to hunt fish over land animals, although its not uncommon for a bear to not eat fish at all.

In Viking northern Europe, the locals firmly believed that by wearing a shirt made of bear skin, the wearer would adopt the powerful characteristics of the bear such as the bears strength and courage. Legend has it that the word berserk is said to originate from this belief from the way the affected men adopting these bear attributes behaved.

The Malaysian sun bear is the smallest of the existing bear species, with the average adult sun bear measuring around 1 meter tall. The polar bear is generally the biggest species of bear with the adults growing to over 3 meters tall. The grizzly bear found in North America is the only other species of bear where the adults can get to this size, but it is uncommon.

Part 2. Symbolic Bears. The Russian bear is a common national personification for Russia (as well as the Soviet Union). The brown bear is also Finland's national animal.
In the United States, the black bear is the state animal of Louisiana, New Mexico, and West Virginia; the grizzly bear is the state animal of both Montana and California.
Bears appear in the coat of arms of Bern and Berlin. Bear symbols are used extensively in Berlin street decorations.
Also, "bear", "bruin", or specific types of bears are popular nicknames or mascots, for example, for sports teams (Bayern Munich, Chicago Bears, California Golden Bears, UCLA Bruins, Boston Bruins); and a bear cub called Misha was mascot of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Soviet Union.
Smokey Bear has become a part of American culture since his introduction in 1944. Known to almost all Americans, he and his message, "Only you can prevent forest fires" (updated in 2001 to "Only you can prevent wildfires"), have been a symbol of preserving woodlands. Smokey wears a hat similar to one worn by U.S. Forest Service rangers; state police officers in some states wear a similar style, giving rise to the CB slang "bear" or "Smokey" for the highway patrol.

Bears in Figures of Speech

The physical attributes and behaviours of bears are commonly used in figures of speech in English.

In the stock market, a bear market is a period of declining prices. Pessimistic forecasting or negative activity is said to be bearish (due to the stereotypical posture of bears looking downwards), and one who expresses bearish sentiment is a bear. Its opposite is a bull market, and bullish sentiment from bulls.
A bear hug is typically a tight hug that involves wrapping one's arms around another person, often leaving that person's arms immobile.
Bear tracking – in the old Western states of the U.S. and, to this day, in the former Dakota Territory, the expression "you ain't just a bear trackin'" is used to mean "you ain't lying" or "that's for sure". This expression evolved as an outgrowth of the experience pioneer hunters and mountainmen had when tracking bear. Bears often lay down false tracks and are notorious for doubling back on anything tracking them. If you are not following bear tracks, you are not following false trails or leads in your thoughts, words or deeds.
In Korean culture, a person is referred to as being "like a bear" when they are stubborn or not sensitive to what is happening around their surroundings. Used as a phrase to call a person "stubborn bear".
The Bible compares King David's "bitter warriors", who fight with such fury that they could overcome many times their number of opponents, with "a bear robbed of her whelps in the field" (2 Samuel 17:8 ). The phrase "a bereaved bear" (דב שכול), derived from this Biblical source, is still used in the literary Hebrew of contemporary Israel.

The constellation of Ursa Major (also know as the Great Bear) has been seen as a bear by many distinct civilizations. Ursa Minor and Ursa Major were related by the Greeks to the myth of Callisto.

Ursa Minor (Latin: "lesser-Bear", contrasting with Ursa Major), also known as the Little Bear, is a constellation in the Northern Sky. Like the Great Bear, the tail of the Little Bear may also be seen as the handle of a ladle, hence the North American name, Little Dipper: seven stars with four in its bowl like its partner the Big Dipper. It was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy.  Ursa Minor has traditionally been important for navigation, particularly by mariners, because of Polaris being the North Pole Star, (the star that forms the end of the tail of the little bear).

One of the few star groups mentioned in the Bible (Book of Job 9:9; 38:32; — Orion and the Pleiades being others), Ursa Major was also pictured as a bear by the Jewish peoples. "The Bear" was translated as "Arcturus" (keeper of the bear) in the Vulgate, and it persisted in the King James Version.

Bears in the book of Job. He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who has resisted him and hath had peace?.......which commandeth the sun and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars. Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea. Which maketh Arcturus, Orion and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south. -- Job 9:9
 • He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south. - Job 9:9
Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Job

Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons? Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? Canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth? Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee? -- Job 38:32

The name of the star Arcturus derives from Ancient Greek Αρκτοῦρος (Arktouros) and means "Guardian of the Bear", ultimately from ἄρκτος (arktos), "bear" + οὖρος (ouros), "watcher, guardian". It has been known by this name since at least the time of Hesiod. This is a reference to its being the brightest star in the constellation Boötes (of which it forms the left foot), which is next to the Greater and Lesser Bears, Ursa Major and Ursa Minor.

Bear Cubs as Pets

The Inuit Eskimo of northern Canada adopt bear cubs as pets; also foxes, birds, and baby seals.

Henry III, king of England had a white bear as a pet.

President Thomas Jefferson owned two bear cubs as pets, a gift from Lewis and Clark.

President Theodore Roosevelt owned five pet bears. He also possessed Sailor Boy, a Chesapeake Bay retriever; Manchu, a Pekingese; Skip, a mutt; terriers named Jack and Pete; cats named Tom Quartz and Slippers; Josiah the badger; Algonquin the pony; Eli the macaw; Jonathan the piebald rat; Emily Spinach, a garter snake; twelve horses; five guinea pigs; other snakes; two kangaroo rats; lizards; roosters; an owl; a flying squirrel; a raccoon; a coyote; a lion; a hyena; and also a zebra

Origin of Teddy Bears

The teddy bear is a soft toy in the form of a bear. It was named after President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, Jr. Since the creation of the first teddy bears which sought to imitate the form of real bear cubs, "teddies" have greatly varied in form, style and material. Teddy bears are among the most popular gifts for children, and are often given to adults to signify love, congratulations, or sympathy.

The word "Teddy Bear" comes from 26th United States President Theodore Roosevelt. The word resulted from a bear-hunting trip in Mississippi in November 1902, to which Roosevelt was invited by Mississippi Governor Andrew H. Longino. There were a lot of hunters shooting, and most of them had already killed an animal. A military of Roosevelt's attendants, shepherded by Holt Collier, cornered, clubbed, and tied an American Black Bear. They called Roosevelt to shoot the bear, but he declined to shoot it himself, regarding it unsportsmanlike, but instructed that the bear be killed to put it out of its misery, and it became the issue of a political cartoon by Clifford Berryman in The Washington Post on November 16, 1902.

Morris Michtom saw the drawing of Roosevelt and was inspired to create a teddy bear. He created a tiny soft bear cub and put it in the shop window with a sign "Teddy's bear," after sending a bear to Roosevelt and receiving permission to use his name. The toys were an immediate success, and Michtom founded the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co. in 1902

The Teddy Bear Theory *

Teddy bears are great, aren’t they? Even if you’re a big, burly guy that won’t admit it, you know you like them, and probably still have one or two at your bed at home, just waiting for you. It is embedded in everyone as a child, that no matter what, a teddy bear will never get mad at you, will always be there for you, and doesn’t mind falling off the bed now and then. The teddy bear protects from the monsters in the closet or under the bed, is always ready to listen, and gives the best hugs.  -- (Read More Here.)

Famous Children's Book about a Real Bear

Winnipeg, or Winnie, was the name given to a female black bear that lived at London Zoo from 1915 until her death in 1934.

Among Winnie's fans was A. A. Milne's son Christopher Robin, who consequently changed the name of his own teddy bear from "Edward Bear" to "Winnie the Pooh", providing the inspiration for his father's stories about Winnie-the-Pooh. See: The Real Winnie

Symphony No. 82 in C Major ("The Bear") by J. Haydn

Symphony No. 82 (Haydn) "The Bear." (Wiki)

The Symphony No. 82 in C major, Hoboken 1/82, is the first of the six Paris Symphonies (numbers 82-87) written by Joseph Haydn. It is popularly known as the Bear Symphony.
The symphony was one of a series of six symphonies commissioned in 1786 by the Concert de la Loge Olympique, a popular concert subscription in Paris (hence the name for the series as a whole). Like the other Paris symphonies, "the Bear" was written for the largest orchestral ensemble that Haydn had written for up until that time, including reinforced woodwind parts and a large string section. Despite its number, the symphony was actually the last of the six Paris symphonies to be composed. It was completed in 1786.

It was first performed in 1787 in Paris by the Concert de la Loge Olympique, directed by the celebrated mulatto musician, Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges.

Nickname (The Bear)

The symphony has long been popularly referred to as "the Bear". As with the nicknames of all Haydn's symphonies, it did not originate with the composer. Instead, the name derives from a recurring feature from the last movement (including its famous opening), in which Haydn intimates the tonality of a bagpipes or Dudelsack: a low sustained drone, accentuated by a grace-note on the downbeat. This curious tonality prompted an 1829 piano arrangement of the symphony to be entitled "Danse de l'Ours," the earliest known printed appearance of the nickname. This is a reference to the music used to accompany dancing bears — a popular form of street entertainment.
