The Conditional

Sometimes we need to talk about events that might or could happen possibly. We can use the conditional tense of "werden" (würde) with the infinitive of the main verb to express the conditional. The other verb is sent to the end of the clause in the infinitive.

eg: ich würde eine Kreuzfahrt machen (I would go on a cruise.)

Usually with modal verbs and the auxiliaries ("haben" and "sein") we use the Konjunktiv II rather than the "würde" form of the conditional.

Conjugation of "werden" in the conditional:

• ich würde
• du würdest
• er/sie/es würde
• wir würden
• ihr würdet
• sie/Sie würden

When using the conditional tense in a "wenn" clause (see Subordinate Clauses), then the verbs in both the main and subordinate clause need to be in the conditional (unlike English).

Examples:

• Wenn ich in die Stadt gehen würde, würde ich eine CD kaufen
• Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich meine Hausaufgaben machen
• Wenn ich im Lotto gewinnen würde, würde ich ein großes Haus kaufen
• Wenn ich klug wäre, würde ich gute Noten bekommen

The Perfect Conditional

To talk about things that may/might/could/should have happened (but didn't) we can use the perfect conditional. This is formed with the conditional tense of "sein" and "haben" plus the past part. of the required verb.

eg: ich hätte gemacht - I would have done �

ich wäre gefahren - I would have gone �

Wenn clauses without "wenn"

Instead of writing "wenn" plus subordinate clause, we can simply put the verb first.

eg: Wenn ich im Lotto £1000 gewinnen würde, würde ich eine Weltreise machen - würde ich im Lotto £1000 gewinnen, (so/dann) würde ich eine Weltreise machen.

The word order for the main clause stays the same, so we have the verb, comma, verb pattern.

1. I would work harder if I found German more interesting.
2. If I found German more interesting I would work harder.
3. I would buy a present for my Mum if I had more money.
4. If I had more money I would buy my Mum a present.
5. If I went to Germany I would change my pounds into Euros.

2. Translate the following in the perfect conditional
1. In those days I would have driven home in that state
2. I would have come but I had no time
3. If I hadn't been so tired I would have gone to the tennis club
4. If someone had helped me when I was younger, I would never have started taking drugs.
5. He would have got angry if he had driven home drunk.

1. Ich würde fleißiger arbeiten, wenn ich Deutsch interessanter finden würde.
