The first game of the new indoor season got off to a dramatic start at lords on Sunday. Having loss the toss, Reekers batted poorly, with the pre-season net in the preceding week having little benefit
.or so it would seem. Reekers managed to post a paltry 71 against newcomers Hackney Grasshoppers, with only Ingram batting with anything like a level head. Scowen found himself padding up rather earlier than expected, but applied himself well and added a precious unbeaten dozen towards the end.
Going from some nasty experiences in the past, such a meagre total just didnt seem anything like enough. However, Reekers do have the experience and that never say die attitude on their side. Scowen, notorious for his treacherous control of outswing produced a wicket first ball of the visitors reply, and the game was on. Grasshoppers seemed unaccustomed to the Reekers noise levels and pressure tactics, and the game appeared to drift back into Reekers hands after regular wickets were lost - not least due to some tactical nous and bowling changes shown by captain Ingram.
Grasshoppers then responded and took the initiative, eventually needing 10 from the last with 2 wickets left. Comer M duly took the ball in this knife-edge situation, and as they so often seem to, the game went down to the wire. A last gasp effort saw Ingram expertly run out Hoppers last man on the penultimate ball, enabling Reekers to sneak a victory at the death. Man of the match James Scowen for his contribution with the bat and excellent bowling.
