Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry

Band: Devil May Cry

From: Toronto, Canada

Track: Johnny Youre an Angel

Web: http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/259/devil_may_cry.html

Despite the far too long URL to get to this duo, the trek is well worth it!  Devil may are one of the diamonds in the dust on MP3.com.  Dont think Im slagging off what is as a site that is a fantastic idea, but by its very makeup any talent less bugger can thrust their musings up the world, leading to the occasional bit of musical chaff.  Devil May Cry rise above this and offer something priceless, an original sound.  The first track on their site is called Johnny Youre an Angel, and starts off with a cool kind of theramin sound and then smashing you in the face with a taste of whats to come - A Prodigy/ hardcore dance beat fighting for space with some very heavily distorted guitars.  Its a very intense start to a song that has you on the edge of your seat waiting for inevitable release of a break in the aural punishment.  The relief comes as (surprisingly) a jangling clean SMITHS type guitar, and the listener is lowered down nicely to meet the divine vocals of Isabeau Novak.  As the vocals kick in they echo the melody of the weird theramin type noise that has been hiding in the song since the start.  To me this is just the kind of thing I love in intelligent song writing, subtle hints leading and teasing towards the killer melody.  Its like a smash pop version of a prelude to a symphony.  The song builds up to the sing along chorus.  The only problem is that unless you have a voice like Isabeau, you will have to reserve singing along to private moments by yourself, or I fear you will sound like a swan flying into a pylon.  Isabeaus voice is like Kate Bush and Bjork having a nice meal in a French Restaurant, with the singer of The Rizillos serving fine wine.  As for song smith Graham, what can I say, the man obviously has a great range of influences to come out with a sound that makes it sound like the SNEAKER PIMPS, APHEX TWIN and the FOO FIGHTERS have formed a super group.  The only let down on this site is the sometimes dodgy sound quality, but that is sometimes a price that has to be paid with online music.  Check out DEVIL MAY CRY, I dont think you will be disappointed.
