American Sign Language

Over the past two decades, interest in American Sign Language (ASL) has experienced tremendous growth. ASL has achieved academic acceptance as a natural language and meets foreign language requirements in Illinois public high schools. Increasingly, individuals are using their sign language skills in many employment settings such as medicine, education, social services and business.

To meet the growing demand, Harper's Department of Sign Language Studies offers a series of American Sign Language courses. The department is committed to providing students with quality instruction and meaningful interactive language-learning experiences. Along with language development, students develop insights into their own culture as well as the culture of the American Deaf community. ASL courses may be used to partially meet the College's humanities requirement. Day, evening and weekend courses are offered to meet the needs of students.

ASL course placement services are available for individuals transferring to Harper College from other institutions or for those who already have some sign language skills. Appointments are scheduled regularly throughout the year. Based upon an assessment of the individual's skill level, a recommendation for course placement will be made. To make an appointment, call the Department of Sign Language Studies at 847.925.6415. Prior to coming for a placement appointment, individuals need to apply for admission to the College. A nominal fee is charged for the ASL placement service.
