French spy planes reportedly join surveillance operations in Somalia

For the first time, French military planes yesterday took part in Somalia's secret air surveillance operations. The planes reportedly joined other US and British planes which have recently been conducting flights through Somalia's air space, in a bid to locate military training camps belonging to Al-Qa'idah affiliates. US and British warships are stationed off the Somali coast in a bid to prevent members of the Al-Qa'idah organization from sneaking into Somalia, after fighting in Afghanistan. Somali writer says U.S. misreads bin Laden story

JOHANNESBURG, Jan 3 (Reuters) - Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda network have far more dangerous friends in London or Milan than they have in Somalia, one of the African country's most famous sons, writer Nuruddin Farah, said on Thursday.

He blamed neighbouring Ethiopia for stirring up trouble and seeking to convince the United States that it should take military action against Somalia as part of its anti-terror campaign.
