in the international fight against terrorism, Britain's minister for Africa said on Monday.

NAIROBI, Jan 7 (Reuters) -

"I know there has been a huge amount of press speculation about this...(but) we have absolutely no intention of going into Somalia and we have made that absolutely clear," Foreign Office Minister Valerie Amos told a news conference on a visit to Kenya.

Somalia, named as one of the states the United States could target in a widening war on terror, is seen by many analysts as an attractive base for terrorists seeking secrecy because it is a lawless patchwork of fiefdoms ruled by rival militias.

Western warships are patrolling the seas off Somalia as part of efforts to prevent al Qaeda fighters escaping there following their defeat in Afghanistan.

Asked if Britain recognised the country's year-old transitional national government, which denies accusations by rival warlords that it harbours terrorists, Amos said only: "We recognise that it is a country in crisis."

Asked if she thought the chaotic Horn of Africa country could be a haven for terrorists, she replied without elaborating: "There are a number of countries which have the potential to be a haven for terrorists coming out of Afghanistan."

Somalia has been in the grip of rival warlords since it descended into chaos after the ousting of former dictator Mohammed Siad Barre in 1991.
