Karaya Village:

The chapter opens with Hugo and Sergeant Joe in Hugo's house discussing food. They are joined by Lulu, a boy Hugo is friends with. Very shortly, Lucia (the Karayan Clan Chief), Hugo's mother, enters to inform Hugo she needs to see him after breakfast. The boys run off to eat. The next scene opens outside of Hugo's house with all three friends full. Sgt. Joe reminds Hugo of his appointment with his mother, and teases him a bit about it. Hugo gets defensive about "being a Mama's boy" (which he appears not to be, but seems to worry about) and Lulu tells you that Lucia is at his (Lulu's) house. You then get control of Hugo for the first time. Lulu, Sgt. Joe, and Fubar join your party.

If you avoid the Left and Bottom of the screen while leaving the Village (basically, give a wide berth to Lulu's house), you will be able to go out into the world and explore. The places available are: Plain Amur, Plains of Amur North, and Duck Village. There seems to be no major advantage or disadvantage from early exploration.

To advance the story, approach Lulu's house. Jimba (a fighter who lives at Lulu's house) will be polishing armor in front of the house and will talk with Hugo, Sgt. Joe, and Lulu. You will soon be joined by Luce (Lulu's mother) and Lucia. Lucia will ask you to deliver a letter of truce to Vinay del Zexay (the Zexen Capital) and are given three response choices:

You want me to go?
(Get an explanation of your Heritage)
Official message?
(Get an explanation about the letter of truce)
The Zexen Capital?
(Get an explanation about the Zexens)

You must run through all three choices to advance the story. After the explanations, you are given a choice:

I'm up to it!
(You agree with confidence)
Um...
(You get encouraged to go)

Sgt. Joe invites himself along on the journey and Lulu then says he wants to go. The adults try to convince Lulu he'd be in the way, and he turns to you for permission:

Why not? I'll keep you safe.
(Promise to protect your younger
friend)
Well...
(Agree that he can come because
Sgt. Joe and Fubar are coming, too)

You receive the !Zexen Letter. You are encouraged to go rest and come back in the morning. If you try to leave the Village, Sgt. Joe prevents you. To advance the story, go to your house and agree to rest:

Um... I suppose.
(Rest)
Not yet.
(Explore the Village some more)

The next scene opens with everyone waiting outside Lulu's house for Lulu, who is late. It seems a majority of Villagers are there to send you off. Your mother pulls you into a hug:

Well then, I'm off.
(Delicately extricate yourself from the situation)
I'll be fine!
(Yell at your mother in embarrassment)

When you finally leave the Village, you meet up with Jimba around the first bend in the road. He asks you to deliver something to the Lightfellow Family in Vinay del Zexay, and gives you the !Pentacle. You once more get control of Hugo.

The first time you return to the Village without completing your missions, Sgt. Joe teases you about being homesick. After that, you can simply go back home anytime the story allows without the teasing.

The places now available to you are: Plain Amur, Plains of Amur North, Duck Village, Brass Castle (East, Inside, and West), Zexen Forest, and Vinay del Zexay.

Plain Amur:

This is the monster-laden area between Karaya Village and Brass Castle East. To advance the story, go through Plain Amur to Brass Castle East.

Brass Castle: East:

Here your party looks suitably impressed by the massive stonework structure. When you again retain control of Hugo, go inside the Castle.

Brass Castle: Interior:

You need to go through the Inside, activating a scene between Chris and her party and your party. Lulu acts nasty to Louis (Chris' squire). Chris recognizes that you are Karayan to which you are given two choices:

And who might YOU be?
(Ask Chris her identity)
How DARE you...!
(Get ignored as Roland talks to Chris)

Roland (Chris' Archer) threatens your party and Sgt. Joe stops you from taking action at the insults. Chris and Louis apologize and her group leaves. Lulu makes a snide comment. You once more have control of Hugo. To continue the story you must go through Brass Castle Interior to Brass Castle West Courtyard.

Brass Castle: West Courtyard:

You simply need to run through here to the Zexen Forest.

Zexen Forest:

Head out to the Zexen Forest, where a scene with Sgt. Joe discussing direction sense will play out. You get control of Hugo once more and may proceed up either path (the lower leading to a bridge, the other looping through trees). Where the paths join once more, you have a chance for a Cut-scene [H1a]. After it ends, keep going west until you leave the forest.

Vinay del Zexay:

To advance the story, you need to enter Vinay del Zexay, where you will hold a brief conversation with Sergeant Joe about Fubar getting odd looks. You send Fubar off (he leaves your party) and turn towards the city. Once inside, your group stares in awe at the size of the city and Sgt. Joe says he will always cherish his first view of the Zexen Capital. You now have control of Hugo once more. You may either deliver the !Pentacle or the !Zexen Letter first, though if you put off delivery of the !Pentacle too long, you may not be able to.

The !Pentacle goes to the man (Chris' butler) in the house with the flower festooned gates on the West of the city. He will offer you a reward. You are given three response choices:

No need. It was a favor for Jimba.
(Refuse any reward)
Well, I do feel hungry...
(Get Creamed Gratin as reward)
Money.
(Ask for a monetary reward)

If you opted for money, you will get two more choices:

Thank you.
(Accept 5000 potch)
Is this all?
(Ask for more money)

If you asked for more money, you will get two more choices:

Thanks.
(Accept the second 5000 potch)
I imagined more...
(Get tossed out. Hugo says "It's not like you've
thrown open the vaults". You still have the
10,000 potch total, though)

The !Zexen Letter goes to the Vinay del Zexay Guild Hall, but you will be unable to deliver it for three or four days game time (not real time). Approach the Guild Hall Guard to get this information then go towards the Inn.

You now have the option of doing the Cut-scene: Saint Loa Knights [H1b1]. If you do this quest, you will need to save at the Inn after completion, visit the Hall again, then save once more before being able to deliver your letter.

If you choose not to do this quest, you merely need to save at the Inn three or four times, talking to the Guild Hall guard after each save.

Once you are allowed inside to deliver your letter, you are given the runaround by a Civil Servant and have two choices:

Here it is.
(Deliver it to the Civil Servant)
I come by order of my clan chief.
(Argue)

If you argued, you will be insulted then given two more choices:

Here it is.
(Deliver it)
But...
(Argue some more)

If you argued again, you will be demeaned to and given two more choices:

Here is the message.
(Deliver it)
I happen to be a Karayan fighter.
(Get insulted a third time and
deliver the letter)

Once you've delivered the letter, go back to the Inn to rest. If you try to leave the city, Sgt. Joe will stop you. At the Inn, you are disturbed by the sound of soldiers. Not liking the implications, you leave by the window and run for the city exit. You will get control of Hugo in the center of town. Going east will cause Sgt. Joe to yell at you, so you can only go west.

In front of the Guild Hall you will encounter a Zexen Knight with two Zexen Guards, which you have to defeat to continue the story. After that, going up the West Ramp, you will encounter a set of two Zexen Knights with two Zexen Guards, again having to defeat them to continue the story. At the top of the ramp you will encounter the Boss and have a chance to go into an optional battle which consists of Percival and Leo (of the Six Mighty Zexen Knights) and two flunkies. You will be given two choices:

No Chance!
(You will fight this battle)
There's no reason to believe you!
(Fubar rescues you)

If you fight the battle and are knocked out, Fubar will rescue you. If you win the battle, Fubar still comes for you.

Zexen Forest:

You will immediately find yourself in the Zexen Forest. Sgt. Joe will prevent you from trying to leave. You must go through the forest to Brass Castle West Courtyard.

Brass Castle: West Courtyard:

You may save at the Save Point, use the Rune Master, and use the Tutor. To continue the story, go to the Interior. You will lose Fubar when entering the Castle.

Brass Castle: Interior:

You can use the Inn, but not go up stairs (Hugo will think better of it), or go beyond the wooden barriers in the center. If you try to go past them, you will lose control of Hugo for awhile. As you need to do this scene to continue, it is inevitable. During the scene, you will duck into the kitchens then find yourself falling through a trap door.

Brass Castle: Sewers:

Once here, you can be attacked by enemies. Trying the closest door (behind you: it comes into play in a later chapter, instead) will get you stopped by Sgt. Joe, so go to the far door: follow the hallway until you get to the end, open the door, and appear outside Brass Castle.

Brass Castle East:

You are rejoined by Fubar and leave Brass Castle behind for Plain Amur.

Plain Amur:

If you try to re-enter Brass Castle, Sgt. Joe will stop you. So go ahead across the plains towards Karaya. Once across the plains, the game automatically takes you to Karaya Village, not allowing you to go north towards Duck Village.

Karayan Village:

You lose Lulu from your group. Going into town, you witness a scene with Lulu and Chris, and it is not a preventable scene. After the scene, you will be give a choice to fight an optional duel with Chris:

Why?!
(You talk with Chris and are interrupted by Sgt. Joe)
You'll pay dearly!
(You get into a duel [H1c1]: not necessary
for story plot, but interesting)

After this battle, you may sit back and watch the end of the chapter, as the computer takes over. You are merely required to press the button to view the conversation. You will be taken to the Trinity Site upon completion.
