The church building is quite unlike any of the other non conformist churches on the island. Not surprisingly, it is a listed building. It has a unique history.
In 1768 a large deposit of copper ore was discovered outside the sleepy village of Amlwch. The industry which followed saw the village rapidly become a town of 5,000 population. There were two mines. One was the Parys mine and the other was the Mona Mine. Sadly, by 1808, the workforce at the Mona Mine had fallen to 20% of what it had been. A new manager was sought.
James Treweek, a Cornishman, took up employment as the manager of the Mona Copper Mine in 1811. His love of Methodism had established him as a lay preacher. He joined the local Methodist Church where worship was in the Welsh language. He soon started an additional service there in the English language for the Cornishmen and women he had recruited to work in his mine. He learned to speak Welsh and became a local preacher in that language too.
It soon became obvious that the Cornish miners and their families needed a Methodist Chapel of their own. Treweek therefore set about providing one and the present building opened in 1832 at a cost of �160.00. In 1837 the extension was completed. The name of the founder of the chapel lives on in our church magazine which is called "Treweek's Outlook".
In 1975 the congregation at the Wesleyan Chapel just down the street finally left their premises to join us and they hold their Welsh service earlier on Sunday mornings.
Today's English congregation is drawn from a number of villages along the north east coast of Anglesey. We are a lively and welcoming group of Christians from other denominations of the reformed tradition as well as Methodists. Each week sees a number of different activities taking place. Each Friday at 10.15am we meet as a prayer fellowship and then continue with a coffee morning to which many people in Amlwch come. We are committed to Fair Trade and operate a Traidcraft Stall each Friday morning during the period of fellowship.
