The High Tech Crime Unit will be utilized to meet several community and departmental needs which include, but are not limited to the following:

1. To conduct investigations into large commercial thefts of computer systems, computer hacking, computer chip thefts, robberies of businesses involved in high tech industry (in which the attack is directed at the theft of components), thefts in which computers were used to accomplish or facilitate the commission of the theft, theft of trade secrets and technology thefts.

2.Conduct undercover investigations to identify, arrest and convict subjects involved in the above thefts and subsequent sales of the stolen computer components.

3. To provide specific technical support in the search, seizure, evidence preservation and expert testimony in the forensic recovery of electronic data from crime scenes and systems used in criminal acts.

4. To provide a direct link to high technology business by the police department to maintain a leading edge in community policing initiatives.

5. Develop and maintain a good working relationship with other local, state, national and private agencies involved in the investigation of high tech crime and to assist them if requested.

6. To provide other sections of the department the training needed to recognize the high tech components, instruct them in the proper handling of the components and conduct initial interviews with persons whom they may come in contact with that they believe may be involved in the theft of components.
