| THE COLLEGE OF SCIENCE of the University
of Santo Tomas was established in 1926 as the College of
Liberal Arts, which offered four-year programs leading to
the degree of Bachelor of Arts (AB), and Bachelor of
Science (BS). Also offered were two-year Associate in
Arts programs (Preparatory Law and Preparatory Medicine).
The Preparatory programs were requirements decreed by the
government at that time for students seeking admission to
Law and Medical schools. From 1926, the College of Liberal Arts began offering other courses of study leading to the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (1931), Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology (1941), Bachelor of Science major in Psychology (1948, now Bachelor of Science in Psychology), Bachelor of Science major in Mathematics and Physics (1952), Bachelor of Science in Mathematics (1966), a three year course for Chemical Technicians in (1974), Bachelor of Science in Mathematics major in Actuarial Science (1974), Bachelor of Science in Microbiology (1979), and Bachelor of Science in Mathematics major in Computer Science (1984). In 1960, the Supreme Court passed a resolution requiring a Bachelor of Arts degree for admission to Law School. In the same year, in compliance with the requirements of the Medical Act of 1959, the two year Pre-Medical course which had already been extended to three years, was finally revised to cover a four-year period of study leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science (General Course), which was a requirement for admission to the Medical School. In 1982, the BS General program was revised to conform to the requirements for a terminal course, the Bachelor of Science major in Biology degree program (now Bachelor of Science in Biology). In 1964, the Catholic University authorities decided to integrate the well-expanded College of Liberal Arts and its many programs, with the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. Thus was born the faculty of Arts and Letters. All programs not included were converted into the College of Science. |
