(Edited) highlights of the things that went wrong.
Mikado,
1981
"Comes a train of little ladies". The ladies chorus
came on stage like a train, not a good thing when the strap of
your sandals breaks, and causes the "train of little ladies"
to fall over like a "set of little dominoes".
Viva
Mexico, 1981
The curtains were closing, and everyone moved behind them, except
Bill Gowdy, who was trapped in front of the curtains.
New
Moon, 1983
At one point, cannons were fired, and on one night, the amount of
explosive used was far too much. The chorus could not see each
other on stage for the smoke, and it rolled down into the
audience, obscuring them too.
Yeomen of the
Guard,
1983
Trevor as Sir Richard Cholmondely had to run on stage to react to a shot being
fired, and came out with "Who shired that fot?"
Sorcerer, 1984
During the picnic scene, the items of food were not always edible - spiders
featured on the menu.
La
Belle Helene, 1984
Agamemnon entered the stage singing "When folks cry brave Agamemnon...".
On one occasion, the song ran:
"When folks
cry brave...hem,hem,hem..." Agamemnon had forgotten his name!
La Belle Helene,
1984
Harry Gilbert as
Ajax was delivering his lines when his mail skirt fell down.
Brigadoon,
1985
The chorus were waiting behind the curtains while the drama unfolded front of
the curtains. The curtains were duly raised - at the wrong time. It is said
that you could hear the slam of the door into the auditorium, the stamping of
the feet up the aisle, and eventually the voice of Trevor shouting "Get
those curtains closed!"
Annie Get Your
Gun, 1992
The Indian squaws were waiting on the train for Nesta as Dolly Tate to appear
and tell them to leave. She didn't appear.
HMS
Pinafore, 1994
The stage was set as the ship, HMS Pinafore, and on one of the lines across
the stage, there was a large pair of knickers. When Trevor noticed, he removed
them, during the interval, only for someone who shall remain nameless, to return
them to where they had been.
The Hunchback
of Notre Dame, 1999
When the Hunchback was being crowned the King of Fools, Peter Boyd as Claude
Frollo had to rip the crown off Quasimodo's head. Unfortunately, in this poignant
moment, he ripped the wig off as well.
The
Mikado, 2000
Pooh-Bah, Ko-Ko and Pitti-Sing are all grovelling before the wrath of the Mikado,
when the scenery falls on them. Almost as bad as "boiling oil or melted
lead".
Ruddigore,
2001 (dress rehearsal)
The portraits that
the ancestors have to come through have a ' revolving door ', the idea being
that once the ancestors come through, the painting is blank. However, even after
their return to their portraits, the bishop had obviously popped off for a quick
sermon. He had revolved the door so that the blank side faced the audience.
Sweeney Todd,
2001
The death of the
Beggar Woman was hampered on the Friday night by the fact that Sweeney fell
on the trap door and broke the handle. Therefore, when he pulled the handle
for the barber's chair to collapse and drop the occupant down the trapdoor,
the Beggar Woman fell on the floor, and had to crawl out the back door of the
barber's shop.
